Highlights
The American’s track and field programs were spread throughout the weekend, as the records, top finishes, and national marks continued. The men’s and women’s programs from around the league hit conference-leading marks in a combined 30 events this week.
- Memphis broke five school records at the Texas relays and Joy Haines Invitational. Martina Rodriguez Sala recorded a time of 4:17.99 in the 1,500-meter run. Later Friday night, senior Arnica Zitting put her name in the Memphis track and field record book with her performance in the women's 10,000 meters at 35:26.35. Mona Jaidia registered a school record hammer throw of school-record throw of 189-0 (57.60m). The Tigers’ 4x400-meter relay squad of Davon DeMoss, Ryan Champlin, Jarred Pasley and Kolbeinn Gunnarsson placed seventh in the event in a school-record time of 3:08.51. Mona Lenton threw 172-0 (52.44m) in the discus to set another school record.
- Taylor Scaife broke the program record in the hammer throw with a distance of 195-6 (59.60m), as the Houston Cougar Men’s and Women’s Track & Field teams opened the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. On Saturday, the Cougars combined for five event titles including three individual and two relays.
- Wichita State had a strong outing at several meets over the weekend. Hunter Veith bettered his school record winning the decathlon at the Texas Relays with 8,046 points, while Jared Belardo took second in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump on the third day of the event. Kelsey Slawson set a school record with a mark of 15.17m/49-9.25 to finish sixth in Section A of the shot put. The women won the ESU Relays with 114 points, while the men finished second with 132.5 points.
- Cincinnati opened its outdoor slate while hosting the Oliver Nikoloff Open, as saw both the men and the women secure five event wins each while the men recorded four marks in the program's all-time Top 10 and the women adding three as well. Both teams captured the first place spot in the meet.
- The USF track and field team wrapped up a busy week on Saturday after participating in three different meets in two states. The Bulls had representatives at the prestigious Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, which began on Wednesday and wrapped up Friday. Ashley Wilson won the women's hammer throw at the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos, Texas to highlight the action, as the Bulls recorded seven marks on the USF outdoor top-10 charts over the three meets.
- UCF's 4x800 squad competed for the first time this outdoor campaign at the Florida Relays and turned in an 8:49.87 time. The quartet of Rosie Chamberlain, Marissa Codispodi, Crystal Tejeda and Beth Williams finished fourth in the event.
- Tulsa’s Adam Roderique placed ninth in the field of 226 runners late Friday night, in the 5,000-meters. The Tulsa track & field team claimed five first-places finishes at the ORU Invite.
- Tulane's men's and women's teams both finished in fifth place at the Jim Bush Legends Invitational, battling a tough field of competitors, including host UCLA, San Diego State, Washington State, Minnesota, UC Santa Barbara and others, and nabbing more than a dozen top-three finishes across the two-day competition. Emmanuel Rotich crushed the school record in the 10,000m race, finishing second with a time of 29:09.24 to highlight the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival at UCLA on Friday night.
- ECU excelled this weekend at the Raleigh Relays, setting two school records and turning in numerous top-10 finishes. Freshman Sommer Knight claimed fifth place in the pole vault invitational event, producing a school-record mark of 3.95 meters. She now owns the indoor and outdoor school records in pole vault. Additionally, Grace Sullivan smashed her personal record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running a 10:26.02 which is good for the program record and the top time in the American Athletic Conference this season.
- After three days of competition at four meets, SMU wrapped up the weekend Saturday with personal records and top performances at the Bobcat Invitational and the Texas Relays. The Mutangs also competed at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival and Stanford Invitational on Friday, with Alison Esparza setting a personal record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the second consecutive week.
- The UConn men’s team sent student-athletes to three different competitions this weekend, taking part in the Pepsi Florida Relays, the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and the Ramapo College Invitational.
