Junior Alberto Barroso-Campos won a three-set battle at No. 1 singles to send No. 5-seeded USF on to the semifinal round of The American Men’s Tennis Championship with a 4-3 win against No. 4-seeded Wichita State Friday morning.

The Bulls, who have won each of the first four American Athletic Conference titles, improved to 13-0 all-time in the tournament despite playing as the lower-seeded team for only the second time in those 13 contests.

The doubles point proved to be the difference in the match as the teams split the six singles contests. The Bulls earned wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to score the first team point, but Wichita State was able to build a 3-1 lead after the Shockers won three of the first four singles matches.

USF’s Peter Bertran tied it a 3-3 when he held off Murkel Dellien for a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles. That set the stage for Barroso-Campos, who took a 6-2 in his first set, dropped the second set by the same score, but rebounded for a 6-3 win in the third.

Alan Rubio’s three-set win at No. 3 singles capped UCF’s comeback from a 3-1 deficit and sent the No. 3-seeded Knights to the semifinal round of The American Championship with a 4-3 win against No. 6-seeded Tulsa Friday afternoon.

UCF, which reached the final of last year’s championship, advances to the semifinal round for the second straight year.

Eero Vasa started the comeback with a straight-set win at No. 5 singles, while Gabriel Decamps bounced back after dropping the first set to take a three-set victory at No. 2. That made the No. 3 matchup between Rubio and Tulsa’s Lucca Baptista the winner-take-all match. Baptista won a second-set tiebreaker to force a deciding third set, but Rubio gained an early break and held on for a 6-2 win.
