SMU, Tulsa Advance To Saturday's Final

DALLAS – SMU's women's tennis team took advantage of its home court to advance to its first American Athletic Conference Championship final, while Tulsa reached the final for the fourth consecutive year following Friday's semifinal matches on the SMU campus.
 
The Mustangs, seeded No. 5 in the tournament, were 4-3 winners against top-seeded UCF, while the No. 2-seeded Golden Hurricane was a 4-2 winner against No. 3-seeded Wichita State.

SMU 4, UCF 3
Records: SMU (15-8), UCF (19-4)

No. 5-seeded SMU extended its winning streak to nine matches as the Mustangs stunned top-seeded UCF in the semifinal round of The American Women's Tennis Championship Friday afternoon.
 
The Mustangs advance to The American Championship final, where they will face No. 2-seeded Tulsa Saturday at 4 p.m. CT.
 
Anzhelika Shapovalova clinched the win at No. 3 singles for SMU as she scored a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory against UCF's Rebeka Stolmar, who lost for just the second time in her freshman season (18-2).
 
SMU dropped the doubles point for the second straight match, but the Mustangs were able to rally by taking four of the six singles matches. Four singles matches were decided in three sets and SMU took three of those four matches.
 
Shapovalova found herself tied at 4-4 in the third set against Stolmar, but Shapovalova took the final two games to send SMU to the final.

Tulsa 4, Wichita State 2

Tulsa, ranked No. 29 nationally, dropped the doubles point against No. 34 Wichita State, but took four of the five singles matches that went to completion as the Golden Hurricane advanced to the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship final for the fourth straight year with a 4-2 win against Wichita State Friday afternoon.
 
The Golden Hurricane looks for its third American title when it faces SMU Saturday. Tulsa was a 4-0 winner against the Mustangs March 23 in New Orleans.
 
Wichita State took the first two completed doubles contests to get the first point in the match, but Martha Matoula put the Golden Hurricane on the board with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. Ksenia Laskutova took a matchup of nationally ranked players from Russia as the 74th-ranked Laskutova was a 6-1, 6-2 winner against No. 60 Fatima Bizhukova to give Tulsa a 2-1 lead.
 
Shura Poppe and Vera Ploner took wins at No. 6 and No. 5 to wrap up the win for Tulsa, which improved to 20-5 on the year. The loss for Wichita State ends the Shockers' run of eight consecutive conference titles (all in the Missouri Valley Conference).
