Highlights
No. 11 ECU completed its weekend sweep at Memphis to move into the No. 1 spot in American Athletic Conference baseball standings. After dropping Game 1 of its nonconference series, Tulane battled back to collect two dominant wins over East Tennessee State to clinch the series. UConn and USF each edged their opponents to force rubber matches tomorrow.
ECU used a pair of 4-2 wins to clinch its series at Memphis. The Pirates propelled themselves to the sole No. 1 spot in league standings with an 8-4 record. Down by two in the fifth inning of Game 2, ECU scored four unanswered runs to clinch its series at Memphis. The Pirates improved to 7-4 in league standings. Bryant Packard and Spencer Brickhouse each had an RBI, while a run was walked in and another was scored on a wild pitch during that span. ECU then tallied four runs through the first three innings in the series finale to capture its second 4-2 win of the day. Outfielder Dwanya Williams-Sutton hit two doubles in the win. The Pirates’ pitching staff combined for eight shutout frames and held the Tigers to four hits.
Tulane bounced back in fashion, sweeping East Tennessee State in a doubleheader to win the weekend series. The Green Wave scored 21 runs on 20 hits in a 21-7 win in Game 2 of the three-game series to avenge a loss from Friday night. Seven Green Wave batters enjoyed a multi-hit game, led by second baseman Jonathon Artigues who went 4-for-6 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Outfielder Grant Witherspoon hit three doubles, while Tulane had three homers in the win. Tulane returned to the diamond 45 minutes later, capturing a 9-4 victory to take Game 3. Witherspoon continued to have a big day, collecting three more hits, including two for extra bases.
Tied at 6-6 in the ninth inning, UConn third baseman Connor Moriarty crossed home plate on a passed ball, as the Huskies evened their series at Cincinnati. The rubber match is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. First baseman Chris Winkel went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead UConn’s offense. Three arms out of the UConn bullpen kept Cincinnati scoreless through the final six frames.
USF third baseman David Villar hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, as the Bulls evened their series with UCF with a 5-4 win. A rubber match is set for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. Starter Peter Strzelecki recorded eight strikeouts through five innings, scattering three runs for the Bulls.
