HELLERTOWN, Pa. -- UConn sophomore Tim Umphrey  captured the first tournament victory of his college career Sunday, winning a three-way sudden-death playoff to bring home the individual championship of the Albarta Coca-Cola Lehigh Valley Collegiate Invite.

The two-round tournament, held at the par-72 Steel Club, was consolidated into a one-day event on Sunday because of a threatening weather forecast for Monday.

Umphrey, playing as an individual, shot a 2-over 74 in the morning round to be part of a tie for 10^th place, but came back with a 4-under 68 in the afternoon, tying for the low round of the tournament. His 2-under total (74-68 - 142) tied with Max Palmer of Robert Morris and Jason Short of Rhode Island for the top spot in the 96-player field.

Palmer bogeyed the first playoff hole to finish in third place, while Umphrey and Short advanced. On the second playoff hole, Umphrey's par was enough to eliminate Short and secure individual medalist honors.

It was the low tournament total of Umphrey's career, his third Top Ten and sixth Top 20 finish and included the third sub-70 round of his career. His previous best finish was a fourth place in the 2017 Lafayette Invitational.

As a team, UConn's 18-over  effort (303-291 - 594) was good enough to finish fourth, just seven strokes behind team champion Rhode Island (587), in the 17-team field. It is UConn's fifth top five finish of the season.

Nabeel Khan led the team effort with a 1-over (72-73 - 145) to finish in a tie for eighth place, Khan's best finish of the year and the fifth top 10 finish of his career. Jimmy Hervol tied for 15th with a 4-over total (76-72 - 148).

UConn's spring schedule continues on April 13-15, when the Huskies will compete at the Clemson Invitational at the Cliffs at Keowee Falls, in Sunset, S.C. It is the last event before UConn heads for the American Athletic Conference Championship on April 22-24 in Palm Harbor, Fla.
