Highlights
UCF and Tulane each took down a ranked opponent to start off The American’s final month of the regular season on a positive note. Cincinnati took a loss to Miami (Ohio), while Houston’s rally came up short at Sam Houston State. The nonconference action continues Wednesday night, as Wichita State takes on Kansas State.
Tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the 10th inning, outfielder Tyler Osik drove in the game-winning run, as UCF walked off against No. 28 Florida Atlantic, 2-1. The Knights picked up their eighth win over a ranked opponent this season. After giving up a run in the third inning, UCF’s pitching staff tossed seven shut-out frames, scattering three hits during this span to close-out the game. Osik finished the night with three hits and the only two RBIs for the Knights. UCF will take on The American’s first place team when it heads to No. 19 Houston for a three-game series this weekend.
A pair of RBI doubles in the ninth inning from outfielder David Bedgood and designated hitter Grant Matthews, respectively, lifted Tulane past No. 11 Southern Miss, 10-7. The Green Wave have won six of their last seven nonconference games, including two wins over ranked opponents during this span. Outfielder Grant Witherspoon hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning before a two-run shot in the seventh from first baseman Trevor Jensen expanded Tulane’s lead to 7-3. Matthews and Witherspoon each ended the night with three hits.
