PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three American Athletic Conference teams were among the 64 chosen to participate in the 2018 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championships.
Tulsa, which won The American’s automatic bid to the tournament, will join UCF and Wichita State in pursuit of the national championship. First-round play begins May 11 at 16 sites. This year’s tournament marks the first time that The American has had three teams chosen to the field.
Tulsa will make its 12th consecutive NCAA Championship appearance as the Golden Hurricane will face No. 36 LSU in Stillwater, Oklahoma, for its first-round match. With a win against LSU, Tulsa would face either No. 7 Oklahoma State or UMKC in the second round. The Golden Hurricane is ranked No. 24 in the most recent Oracle/ITA national rankings
Tulsa’s last win in the NCAA Championship came in the 2016 season, also in Stillwater, when the Golden Hurricane knocked off an SEC opponent in the first round (Arkansas) before falling to Oklahoma State in the second round.
UCF returns to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2002 as the Knights will face No. 39 FIU in a first-round match in Coral Gables, Fla. UCF, which was a 4-1 winner against the Panthers March 30, would face either LIU-Brooklyn or No. 15 Miami (Fla.) in the second round. UCF is ranked No. 22 in the Oracle/ITA rankings.
Wichita State earned an at-large bid to the tournament in their first year as an American Athletic Conference member as the Shockers make their 10th straight NCAA appearance. Wichita State, which is ranked No. 37 nationally, will face No. 27 Syracuse in the first round in Oxford, Mississippi, and would play either No. 5 Ole Miss or Missouri State in the second round.
