Tulane clinched its series with Memphis, while No. 10 ECU and No. 22 USF each secured Game 2 wins to force rubber matches tomorrow. After winning in 14 innings on Friday, UCF dropped its second game of the series to No. 26 Oklahoma, as the finale will be played at 11 a.m. ET tomorrow in Orlando.
Tulane designated hitter Grant Matthews tied The American’s single game home runs record with three in a 13-2 rout of Memphis to help the Green Wave clinch a conference series and earn the seventh qualifying spot in the 2018 conference championship. Tulane had five home runs in the game. Outfielder Grant Witherspoon hit a grand slam to fuel a six-run seventh inning surge. It marked his third grand slam of the season. Tulane and Memphis conclude the series at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday at Turchin Stadium.
USF tallied 12 hits and eight runs through the first three innings, and rolled to a 9-6 win in Game 2 at Wichita State to force a rubber match on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. ET. USF has won six rubber games this season. The Bulls had four doubles, as all nine batters recorded at least one hit. Outfielder Duke Stunkel Jr. and third baseman David Villar combined for seven hits. Andrew Perez earned his 10th save of the year.
First baseman Spencer Brickhouse hit a pair of home runs and drove in a career-high six runs, while shortstop Turner Brown collected four hits and scored four times, lifting ECU to a 13-6 win over Cincinnati. The Pirates pounded out 14 hits improving to 20-2 on the season when reaching double-digit base knocks. Sunday’s rubber match is set for 1 p.m. ET.
