American Softball Places Thirteen on NFCA All-Region Lists

NFCA ALL-REGION TEAMS

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A conference-record thirteen individuals from six separate American softball teams were tabbed to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division I All-Region Teams on Thursday. Houston and USF led The American with three honorees apiece, as all three selected Bulls were named as First Team recipients.

Thirteen is the most All-Region plaudits for The American in its five seasons of softball, bettering the previous high of 11. UCF, Memphis and Tulsa all placed multiple players on the list, with American Player of the Year Mackenzie Wright representing Wichita State for the first time on her career. Every All-Region honoree is now eligible for the NFCA All-America ballot.

Half of the American’s selections were selected as First Team All-Region. Houston’s Savannah Heebner was the lone conference player named to the stacked Central Region’s First Team, earning the honor at UTL/P for the second-consecutive season.

Of the Mideast Region’s 13 First Team awardees, five were from American squads. Georgina Corrick, Lindsey Devitt and Astin Donovan comprised USF’s trio of selections, and were joined by Cassady Brewer and Alea White from UCF. Of the group, Donovan is the only repeat All-Region selection from 2017.

For the first time in program history, Memphis placed two on the All-Region lists. Kyler Trosclair Klatt earned Second Team All-Central Region accolades at shortstop, with Baylee Smith making the Third Team at outfield. Joining the Tigers and teammate Heebner on the Central Region teams were Houston’s Arielle James and Sarah Queen, both earning Third Team nods at second and third base, respectively.

Three-time American Athletic Conference champion Tulsa earned a pair of repeat All-Region recipients in Emily Watson and Julia Hollingsworth. Both were named Second Team All-Central Region, with Watson taking the award for the second-straight year. Hollingsworth was tabbed to the Third Team in 2017.

The American tied a conference record with four teams selected to the 2018 NCAA Softball Championship on Sunday. All four teams – Houston, USF, Tulsa and Wichita State – open tournament play tomorrow at their respective Regional sites.
