PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the final winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the week ending May 19.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bryant Packard * So. * DH/OF * ECU
Packard had a multi-hit performance in all four games last week, slugging 1.056 and hitting .556 (10-for-18), as half of his hits went for extra bases. His line included two home runs, eight runs scored, four RBIs and three doubles. He set an ECU record, extending his hit streak to 32 straght games and on-base streak to 37. Packard hit two home runs in consecutive at-bats for the third time this season during a 3-for-4 performance in a 6-3 Game 2 win at No. 22 UConn. With the win, the Pirates ended their regular season tied for third place in The American’s standings and secured the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament. He recorded his eighth game-winning RBI of the season with his two-run homer in ECU’s Friday win.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Chris Williams * R-Jr. * RHP * UCF
Williams scattered two runs on three hits through 8.0 innings, while fanning seven batters in a 3-2 walk-off win against Tulane, as the Knights clinched the series. After the first inning, the Green Wave only managed one hit against the redshirt junior, which came in the third. Williams then retired the next 11 batters in order.
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Kyle Mottice * Sr. * 2B * Cincinnati
Mottice pounded out 11 hits and batted .688 with six RBIs, five runs scored, an .812 slugging percentage and one triple through the Bearcats’ final regular season games. He started off the week strong, driving in three runs in a 14-4 win over Ohio State. He then had a multi-hit game in each contest of Cincinnati’s regular season series finale against USF. He went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in a 10-7 Game 1 win and recorded three hits in Game 2 and 3.
Mason Feole * So. * LHP * UConn
Feole eclipsed the 100-strikeout mark for the first time in his career in a 3-2 Game 1 win over No. 9 ECU to help the Huskies clinch the No. 3 seed in the conference championship for a second-consecutive year. The southpaw threw 6.1 innings, surrendering two runs and striking out four.
Trey Cumbie * Jr. * LHP * Houston
Cumbie struck out eight and allowed just one earned run on five hits and three walks through 6.1 innings in a 6-3 series-opening win over Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday for his sixth win of the season. He retired the side in order through the first three frames.
Duke Stunkel Jr. * Sr. * OF * USF
Stunkel Jr. hit .500 (6-for-12) in the year’s final weekend series with two doubles, a homer, two RBIs and a team-high seven runs. He slugged .917 and had a .625 on-base percentage. Stunkel Jr. had a hit in each game over the weekend at Cincinnati, tallying two multi-hit games in Friday’s doubleheader sweep. He went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored in Game 1 and 2-for-5 with three more runs, a double and a homer in Game 2, helping the Bulls win their sixth series of conference play and clinch the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.
Liam Eddy * Fr. * RHP * Wichita State
Eddy, a freshman right-hander, earned an 8-4 win in Game 2 of the series at Memphis. He pitched five shutout innings of relief and allowed just two hits with one walk and five strikeouts. He retired the first nine batters he faced.
