CLEARWATER, Fla. – Alec Bohm’s two-run double in the top of the seventh inning broke a 1-1 tie and sent No. 7-seeded Wichita State to a 4-3 win against No. 2-seeded USF Wednesday morning in the American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship presented by Visit St. Pete/Clearwater at Spectrum Field.
Wichita State (35-19-1), playing in its first American Athletic Conference Championship, moves into the winners’ bracket, where the Shockers will face the winner of Wednesday’s game between No. 3-seeded UConn and No. 6-seeded Cincinnati at Spectrum Field. The Bulls (32-19-1) will face the UConn/Cincinnati loser at Robin Roberts Field. Both of those games will be played at 4 p.m. ET Wednesday.
Bohm’s double to left in the seventh came as part of a 2-for-5 day for the Shockers’ third baseman. Luke Ritter went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while first-baseman Greyson Jenista was 2-for-4 as the top three hitters in the Wichita State lineup combined for seven of the Shockers’ nine hits.
Shocker reliever Kevin Killgore was the winning pitcher after he worked 6.0 innings and scattered four hits, allowing only one unearned run. Chandler Sanburn came on with one on in the ninth and got a double play ball and a strikeout to register his ninth save of the season.
Coco Montes and Kyle Phillips had two hits each for USF. Bulls starter Shane McClanahan worked 5.0 innings and allowed one run on five hits and five walks with six strikeouts. Noah Yager took the loss for the Bulls, falling to 2-1 on the year.
