Woodworth's Homer Helps Lift UConn Past Cincinnati

CLEARWATER, Fla. –  Michael Woodworth went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, and southpaw Mason Feole struck out 11 batters in seven innings of work as No. 3-seeded UConn took a 6-2 win against No. 6-seeded Cincinnati Wednesday afternoon in the opening game for both teams in the American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship presented by Visit St. Pete/Clearwater.

Woodworth’s three-run shot in the fifth inning gave UConn a 4-0 lead as the Huskies rapped 12 hits off a pair of Cincinnati pitchers. Shortstop Anthony Prato led the way with a 4-for-5 performance, while Isaac Feldstein went 1-for-3 with a two-run double.

The offensive production was plenty for Feole, who scattered five hits and two walks to allow only two runs in the win as the all-conference selection improved to 9-1. Jacob Wallace worked the final two innings to pick up his third save of the season.

Cincinnati starter Cam Alldred worked 6.1 innings, allowing five runs and nine hits with seven striketous. Eric Santiago accounted for the Bearcats’ run total with a screaming two-run home run to left in the sixth inning.

Both teams are back in action later Wednesday afternoon. UConn will play Wichita State in a winners’ bracket game on Spectrum Field, while Cincinnati takes on USF in an elimination game at Robin Roberts Field.

The schedule for the coming days of The American Championship will be announced following Wednesday’s action.
