PROVIDENCE, R.I. – UConn, ECU, Houston and USF were among the 64 teams announced Monday to compete in the 2018 NCAA Baseball Championship. The American’s four selections are the most since 2015 and are tied for the fourth-most bids with the Big Ten and Pac-12 among the 31 NCAA Division I conferences.
Each regional field features four teams, playing a double-elimination format. All 16 regionals are scheduled to be conducted from Friday, June 1, to Monday, June 4.
After capturing its second American Athletic Conference Championship title on Saturday, ECU (43-16) was chosen to host the Greenville Regional for the first time since 2009 at Clark-LeClair Stadium. The Pirates make their third NCAA Championship appearance in the past four years and 29th overall trip. ECU will take on No. 4-seeded UNC Wilmington (37-21) on Friday, June 1 at 7 p.m. ET, as the Greenville Regional also features South Carolina (32-24) and Ohio State (36-22).
Houston (36-23), who won its second outright conference regular season title this season, will head to North Carolina for the Chapel Hill Regional as the No. 3 seed and face No. 2-seeded Purdue (37-19) at 2 p.m. ET on Friday. The Cougars make their second-straight trip to an NCAA regional after hosting one last season and have competed in NCAA regional action in four of the past five years. This marks Houston’s 21st bid to the NCAA Championship. The other half of the Chapel Hill Regional will feature No. 1-seeded North Carolina (38-18) and No. 4-seeded N.C. A&T (32-23).
USF (35-20-1) earned its second-consecutive and 13th overall trip to the NCAA Championship and will battle in the DeLand Regional hosted by Stetson. The Bulls will compete as the No. 2 seed, as their road to Omaha begins with No. 3-seeded Oklahoma State on Friday at 1 p.m. ET. The DeLand Regional also has No. 1-seeded Stetson (45-11) taking on No. 4-seeded Hartford (26-29).
UConn (35-20-1) was picked as a No. 2 seed in the Conway Regional hosted by Coastal Carolina and will head to an NCAA regional for the first time since 2016. It marks the Huskies’ 20th trip to the NCAA Championship. The Huskies will take on No. 3-seeded Washington (30-23) on Friday at Noon ET, while No. 1-seeded Coastal Carolina (42-17) will face No. 4-seeded LIU Brooklyn (31-24) on the other half of the Conway Regional later in the day.
Thirty-one (31) Division I conferences receive an automatic berth in the field of 64, along with 33 at-large selections. The regional format for the Division I baseball championship is a double-elimination tournament format with the winning 16 teams advancing to Super Regionals, which will be held from June 8-11. The top eight teams remaining will host the Super Regionals on-campus in a best-of-three series with the eight winners advancing to Omaha.
The College World Series will be held from June 16-26/27 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. The eight Super Regional winners will compete in two four-team double elimination brackets. The two winning teams from each bracket will play in a best two-of-three championship series to determine the national champion.
