Highlights
The American’s baseball teams went 5-2 through their first seven of 11 midweek games to start the week. Cincinnati, No. 18 UConn, No. 10 ECU, Wichita State and Memphis each picked up a nonconference win.
Third baseman Alec Bohm's solo home run in the fourth inning gave Wichita State a 2-1 win over Oral Roberts, as the Shockers improved to 21-6 at Eck Stadium this season. Bohm’s solo shot was his team-leading 11th home run of the year. The Shockers’ pitching staff combined for eight shutout innings. Wichita State continues its home stand against South Dakota State tomorrow night.
Nick Vaage hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to give Memphis a 5-4 walk-off victory over Belmont. Taylor Bobo pitched a career-high five scoreless innings of relief to lead Memphis on the mound. Vaage finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. In all, eighth different Tigers had at least one hit in the game.
The trio of Brady Lloyd, Bryant Packard and Dwanya Williams-Sutton each hit home runs, while Jake Kuchmaner notched his second win of the season helping No. 10 ECU to a 9-1 win over Norfolk State. ECU extended its win streak to four games and has now won 12-straight non-conference games. ECU hits the road Wednesday when it travels to UNC Wilmington for a 6 p.m. ET contest.
UConn scored 13 unanswered runs, using 20 hits to run away with a 13-2 victory against Sacred Heart. All nine starters grabbed at least one hit. The Huskies jumped out to an early 11-1 lead through the opening four frames. Seven Huskies recorded a multi-hit performance, led by shortstop Anthony Prato and third baseman Conor Moriarty who both had three RBIs. UConn has won its past 10 nonconference games and will head to Northeastern on Wednesday.
Cincinnati took its second game of the year against crosstown rival Xavier, 6-1, to clinch the season series. Jalen Wade was great in the start, going 6.0 innings with one run, three hits, three walks and seven strikeouts. Outfielder Treg Haberkorn had his second three-run homerun in as many games. The Bearcats will take on Louisville tomorrow night.
USF jumped out to a strong start at No. 1 Florida, scoring six runs in the first two innings, but the Bulls suffered a late Gator surge and fell, 11-8. USF designated hitter Chris Chatfield went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. The Bulls are back in action this weekend for a series at Wichita State.
