Highlights
No. 18 UConn, No. 10 ECU and Wichita State each picked up their second midweek wins of the week on Wednesday to fuel an 8-3 midweek outing for the conference. The league will return to conference play this weekend, as two weeks remain in the regular season.
UConn scored five runs with two outs in the eighth inning to defeat Northeastern, 6-5 on the road. The Huskies broke their school record with 22 road wins. Third baseman Conor Moriarty went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. P.J. Poulin recorded a four-out save for his conference-leading 13th of the season. The Huskies have won nine of their last 10 nonconference games and head back into conference play this weekend against Houston having won five straight league series.
ECU picked up its 13th straight nonconference win in a 5-4 edge at UNC Wilmington to clinch the season series. The Pirates own the nation’s second-best away record at 18-2 and have won 10 consecutive road games. Trailing by three runs, ECU did all its damage in the fifth inning, plating all five of its runs. First baseman Spencer Brickhouse hit a two-run triple during that span. He ended the night with three hits and reached base safely five times. ECU will host Cincinnati in a three-game series this weekend.
Wichita State scored three runs in the first inning on the way to a 10-0 win over South Dakota State. The Shockers improved to 22-6 at home this year. Starter Jacob Lindemann pitched three shutout innings and allowed just one hit with two walks and three strikeouts. Liam Eddy went three innings, while Codi Heuer, Preston Minor and Paxton Wallace each pitched a scoreless frame to combine for the shutout. Outfielder Greyson Jenista went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a double and a home run, while designated hitter Gunnar Troutwine, first baseman Mason O'Brien and catcher Ross Cadena each drove in two. Wichita State will continue its home stand, hosting No. 22 USF in a three-game series this weekend.
