UConn and USF survive NCAA elimination games; ECU, Houston fall on Saturday

- David Villar and Joe Genord drove in five runs in the top of the 11th inning to break a 4-4 tie, as No. 2-seeded USF survived an elimination game against No. 4-seeded Hartford with a 9-4 win in the DeLand Regional of the NCAA Championship. Villar started the late rally with a two-run RBI single to center field before Genord added three more insurance runs with a three-run home run blasted over the left field wall. Southpaw closer Andrew Perez earned the win after pitching the final four innings, scattering four hits and one run. The Bulls will play another elimination game Sunday at 1 p.m. ET against No. 3-seeded Oklahoma State.

- Down by three in the fourth inning, UConn punched 10-straight runs across to survive and elimination game against LIU Brooklyn with a 10-3 win in the Conway Regional of the NCAA Championship. Lefthander Tim Cate threw 5.1 scoreless innings in relief, fanning six batters, while scattering two hits and two walks. Eight Huskies had at least one hit, while five different players in the lineup drove in runs. Christian Fedko went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. UConn will face top-seeded Coastal in another elimination game Sunday at Noon ET.

LP: Cumbie (7-4)

-  Trey Cumbie fanned nine batters through 7.0 innings, but Houston was edged by top-seeded North Carolina, 4-3, in a winner’s bracket Chapel Hill Regional matchup. The Cougars will face Purdue in an elimination game Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Joe Davis hit his 32nd-career home run in the bottom of the ninth to make it a one-run game, but the Tarheels retired the final pair of Houston hitters to clinch the win.

-  American Athletic Conference Player of the Year Bryant Packard went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for No. 1-seeded ECU, but the Pirates fell to No. 2-seeded South Carolina, 4-2, in an NCAA Championship winner’s bracket game. ECU will return to Clark-LeClair Stadium for an elimination game Sunday against No. 4-seeded UNC Wilmington at 2 p.m. ET.
