Cincinnati 2, Cleveland State 0
Looking for its first win of the season, University of Cincinnati men's soccer bounced back on Friday with a 2-0 shutout of the Cleveland State Vikings at Krenzler Field.
The Bearcats (1-2) got ahead of CSU (0-3) early with a goal by newcomer Moritz Schaller in the 7th minute. After taking a 1-0 advantage into the halftime break, UC added an insurance goal early in the second half on a score by Daniel Oginni during the 55th minute. Stout defense continued for UC throughout the contest as it came away with a badly-needed road victory.
The Bearcats were aggressive offensively with season highs of 13 shots, including eight on goal. In his first start of the season, Pearce Skinner registered five saves. Darryn Commissiong totaled a team-best four shots.
Coastal Carolina 2, Memphis 0
The Tigers found themselves on the wrong side of the ledger against Coastal Carolina, suffering a 2-0 loss in the first match of the Soccer for a Cure Classic in Birmingham, Ala.
The action got going early as Memphis fired off three shots in the first 15 minutes. Though none found the back of the net, the aggression was apparent as the Tigers were set to take on a tough squad.
In the 67th minute of the match, Coastal Carolina put together a passing exchange inside the box that freed up Saif Alhameli, who put home the first goal of the match.
Coastal Carolina found the back of the net for the second time in the 85th minute, increasing its margin to a two-goal lead.
Notre Dame 3, UConn 0
The No. 18 UConn men's soccer team was blanked by No. 24 Notre Dame on Friday evening, 3-0, at Jerry Yeagley Field – dropping its first match of the 2018 season to its old Big East rival.
The Huskies (2-1-0) were outshot, 10-4, managing only a couple good scoring chances throughout the contest against the nationally-ranked Fighting Irish (1-0-1). Freshman goalkeeper Gianluca Catalano made a pair of saves in the losing effort.
It is UConn's fourth-straight loss to Notre Dame, tying the all-time series with the Irish (11-11-4). Friday was the first time since the 2012 campaign that both teams were ranked when facing one another.
UCF 4, Liberty 1
It was a game to remember for Cal Jennings who joined the UCF men’s soccer hat trick club netting three goals in the 4-1 win over Liberty Friday evening at the UCF Soccer Complex.
Jennings put in 65 minutes of play with four shots on goal in his second game of the 2018 campaign.
Gorka Aperribay registered his first goal and assist of the season, while Louis Perez and Hattabiou Barry each recorded an assist.
The Knights move to 2-1 on the season with Yannik Oettl mirroring the record as he picked up his second win. UCF’s dominant defense led to Oettl having to face just two shots on goal in his 90 minutes.
Virginia Tech 1, USF 0
USF men's soccer fell 1-0 to Virginia Tech on Friday night in front of nearly 1,000 fans at Corbett Stadium.
Despite taking over 20 shots, four of which coming on frame, USF (0-3-0) did not connect with the back of the net while Tech (3-0-0) scored in the 24thminute. Virginia Tech's Kristo Strickler punched in a slow-moving ball on the ground after a corner kick placed the ball in the six-box, which was first headed by teammate Marc Hoppler before being deflected to Strickler's feet.
USF junior goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares had his second stellar night on the season, earning nine saves while allowing the goal on the set piece on the night. Devenish-Meares, who had just set his career-high in saves on Monday night against Michigan, set his career-high for the second time this week with nine on Friday night.
VCU 1, Temple 0
A converted penalty kick in the 42nd minute decided the result tonight, causing the Temple men's soccer team (0-2-0) to fall to the VCU Rams (2-1-0), 0-1. The Owls put together a very strong second half against the talented opponent, but the Rams were able to hold on to keep Temple scoreless.
The Owls showed great strides this match, despite the end result. In the second half, Temple controlled possession and maintained a strong attacking presence, but the Rams' defense thwarted multiple opportunities by the Temple offense.
VCU made a statement early in the match when they rocketed their first shot of the game only 30 seconds in, blocked by the talented Temple defense.
The lone goal of the match came in the 42nd minute when VCU's Siad Haji converted a penalty kick for his first goal of the season.
SMU 1, Incarnate Word 0
SMU made it 15 wins in the last 16 outings at Westcott Field with a 1-0 victory against Incarnate Word on Friday night. Talen Maples scored SMU's only goal in the 60' minute as he collected the loose ball about eight yards from the center of the goal and fired it over UIW's Carlos Mercado.
The Mustangs (2-1) finished the game with an 18-11 shot advantage over UIW (0-3), with 12 of the chances coming in the second half. Ten of the 18 field players for SMU too a shot. Christian Boroom led the way with four attempts while Nicky Hernandez (3), Akean Shackleford (3) and Emil Cuello (2) also had multiple attempts.
For Maples, it was his second straight game with a goal and the third score of his career. Grant Makela started at goalkeeper for SMU and recorded his second straight shutout, getting four saves in the triumph.
UNLV 1, Tulsa 0
The Tulsa men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 match to UNLV on Friday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU fell to 1-1-1 on the season, while UNLV moved to 3-0 overall.
Marco Gonzalez scored the Rebels goal at the 59:25 mark off a combination from Bay Kurtz and Tyler Allen for his fourth goal this season.
UNLV had a 15-13 lead in shots, including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal, and a 4-2 lead in corner kicks.
Juan Sanchez had four of TU's shots, while Thomas Wells added two and seven others had one attempt. Cooper Clark logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up five saves.
