PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American wrapped up women's soccer nonconference play in week five and did so in impressive fashion. Memphis, which leads the nation with eight shutouts, knocked off Ole Miss, 2-0, while UCF upended instate foe Florida, 3-0, and Cincinnati, which has already played four top-25 foes, defeated LSU, 2-1.
American teams ended the non-league slate well over .500 as the conference combined for 43 wins and 93 points.
The American still boasts two teams in the national top-25 rankings as USF is up to No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and 16 in the TopDrawerSoccer rankings. Memphis also makes it first appearance in the polls as they received 47 votes in the United ranking, 17 shy of No. 25.
The league also has three teams that have only suffered one defeat (Memphis, USF, ECU) and four teams with at least 11 point (Memphis, ECU, SMU, Cincinnati).
Eight of 10 teams have won four games and seven boast records of at least .500. Four squads have won at least have games and the top five teams in the standings combine for a 27-8-4 record.
American Conference play starts in grand fashion with eight of 10 teams in action and eight games in four days on the docket.
Cincinnati at league-leading Memphis headlines the Thursday slate while the Tigers will continue a tough start to conference play as they host ECU on Sunday.
SMU hosts Temple and UConn this week. Other Texas games include the Huskies at Houston (9/13) and Temple at the Cougars (9/16).
The Pirates will also play at Tulsa to round at Thursday action while the Hurricane will also welcome the Bearcats to Oklahoma on Sunday.
