PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly men’s soccer honors for the week ending Sunday, Sept. 23.
Offensive Player of the Week
Lukas Fernandes * Jr. * F * Temple
Fernandes registered the only goal needed for Temple on Friday evening, as the Owls opened conference play with a 1-0 victory over UCF. The junior put in the pass from teammate Elias Hellgren Villegas for the one-touch goal in the 22
nd minute. Temple kept The American’s top offense off the board for the entirety of the game, sealing Fernandes’ goal as the game-winner. Fernandes has now scored in back-to-back contests.
Defensive Player of the Week
Talen Maples * So. * D * SMU
Maples played the full 90 minutes for the Mustangs in SMU’s 1-0 win over Tulsa to open conference play on Saturday. SMU’s defense held Tulsa to just five shots, four on goal, clinching the first Mustang win to open league play since 2015. Maples fired a shot on goal in the contest.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Simon Lefebvre * Jr. * Temple
Lefebvre saved all seven shots he faced on Friday, carrying Temple to a 1-0 conference win over UCF. The Owls’ defense stymied one of the nation’s top offenses, as the Knights entered the contest averaging a Division I-best 19.14 shots per game. For the season, Lefebvre owns the conference’s third-best goals against average at 0.80 and second-highest save percentage at .815.
Rookie of the Week
Lane Warrington * Fr. * M * SMU
Warrington netted the lone goal for SMU – the first of his collegiate career – to lift the Mustangs to a 1-0 win over Tulsa on Saturday. The freshman converted on his only shot in the contest, striking a perfectly-placed ball from just outside the goal box off the pass from Nicky Hernandez. The win marked the second-straight victory for SMU.
