Highlights
- Four American Athletic Conference swimming and diving programs were in action on Saturday, as Cincinnati’s men’s and women’s teams swept crosstown rival Xavier in a dual meet. The UConn men’s team also began its 2019 season on a high note, defeating Dartmouth College 122-115 on the road. ECU and SMU additionally competed in dual meets with the Pirates facing South Carolina and the Mustangs hosting Rice and Arkansas.
The Bearcat men won by a score of 222.50-71.50, while the women won 209.50-84.50. Cincinnati captured 23 events with seven race podium sweeps. Sixteen different Bearcat swimmers earned individual first-place finishes, while Cincinnati also swept the relay events. On the diving front, Claire Schuermann had the best scores for the women in both 1-meter (287.05) and 3-meter (289.25). Tai Sims had the best dive for the men with a 268.95 3-meter score.
Behind a pool record in the men's 100 Back by Will Kearsey, the UConn men’s swimming team captured a dual meet victory in Hanover, N.H., against the Big Green. Kearsey earned the pool record by swimming a time of 48.65. Kearsey also earned a first-place finish in the 50 Free (20.62) and with Josh Bryant, David May and Kyle Dunlap in the 200 Medley Relay (1:33.67). May also had a solid meet for the Huskies with a pair of top spot finishes in the 100 IM (52.31) and the 100 Fly (49.74).
The UConn women's team lost its first dual meet of 2019 at Dartmouth, 154-83. Three Huskies notched first place finishes on
Saturday evening with Georgia Apostolu winning the 100 Backstroke with a time of 58.21. Meg Wenman (200 IM) and Jennie Novak (100 IM) also captured top spot races for UConn.
The ECU men's and women's teams each lost to host South Carolina in a dual meet. The ECU men lost, 180-120, to drop to 3-2 this season, and the Pirates' women's squad fell, 185-100, and are now 3-3 overall. The Pirate men's team collected four individual victories. Magnus Andersen won the 100 Back, Gavin Erdmann finished first in the 50 Free, Marek Osina claimed first-place in the 200 Back and Jacek Arentewicz captured a win in the 200 Breast. The ECU women claimed 11 runner-up finishes. Catherine Johnson (50 Free, 100 Free), Shannon Stott (200 Free, 200 Fly), Marianna Vignoli (500 Free, 1000 Free) and Lily West (100 Breast, 200 Breast) each captured second-place in two events.
The SMU women's team fell to Arkansas and Rice in a double-dual meet at home on Saturday. The Mustangs fell to Arkansas, 171-124, and to Rice, 150-144. Gabi Grobler (200 IM), Olivia Grossklaus (200 Fly), Felicity Passon (100 Back) and Erin Trahan (100 Fly) were event winners for SMU, while Taylor Ohlhauser posted a career-best 276.08 on 3-meter for a runner-up finish.
