- Three American Athletic Conference swimming and diving programs were in action on Saturday, Jan. 19, as the league continued its 2019 slate. Cincinnati faced three teams at Virginia Tech, while ECU and Houston battled UMBC and Arkansas, respectively, in dual meets.
ECU wrapped up its dual meet schedule Saturday afternoon with a sweep of the UMBC Retrievers at Minges Natatorium. The Pirate men posted a 194-106 win, while the women earned a 157-143 victory. The ECU men's squad finished with a dual meet record of 4-2, capping their 36th straight season finishing at .500 or above, while the ladies posted their 27th consecutive winning campaign with a 4-3 record.
The Pirates’ men's squad claimed 12 first-place finishes and was led by freshmen Lyubomir Epitropov and Maek Osina along with junior Blaz Demsar, who each won two events. Catherine Johnson was the only multi-event winner for ECU on the women's side, winning the 50 (23.83) by 0.70 seconds and the 100 (51.50) by 1.66 seconds.
Cincinnati competed at Virginia Tech in a meet that featured the Hokies, JMU and George Washington. The men’s and women’s teams combined for 23 podium finishes, including five first-place nods. Rocky Laabs (1000 free; 10:12.70), Dominic Polling (100 breaststroke; 56.57), Victoria Hunt (200 breaststroke; 2:21.33), Dalton Lillibridge (200 breaststroke; 2:05.63) and Lina Kutsko (100 butterfly; 55.87) each won their respective individual events.
Houston posted 21 podium finishes, including a pair of first-place finishes, but fell short in a 193-107 loss to (rv) Arkansas Friday evening at HPER Natatorium. The Cougars racked up 20 top-three finishes, including a pair of first-place finishes in the 100 backstroke by Laura Laderoute (55.03) and Ioanna Sacha in the 200 backstroke (2:00.19).
