PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of its weekly men’s and women’s tennis honors for the week-ending Jan. 20.

Roman Dominguez went 3-0 at No. 1 singles and added a win at No. 2 doubles in USF’s first three dual matches of the 2019 season. Roman Dominguez, who was unranked in the final Oracle/ITA fall rankings, knocked off a pair of nationally ranked opponents, including a three-set win against LSU’s top player, who is ranked No. 13 nationally. Roman Dominguez began the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win against the No. 88-ranked player from Florida Atlantic, while she added a 6-4, 6-3 singles win as well as the clinching doubles victory against Florida Gulf Coast in the Bulls’ 5-2 win.

The American had two women’s teams in the first Oracle/ITA rankings. UCF enters the spring season ranked No. 20 nationally, while Tulsa stands at No. 22.

The 2019 American Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will be held in April at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. The women’s championship takes place April 17-20, while the men’s championship will be played April 18-21.
UCF (2-1), which is ranked No. 20 in the Oracle/ITA rankings, scored a 6-1 win against Georgia Southern in the Knights’ spring opener, but dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 15 Florida State Sunday. UCF heads to Evanston, Illinois, for the ITA Kickoff Weekend. UCF will face No. 19 Northwestern Saturday and will meet either No. 17 Miami (Fla.) or No. 22 Tulsa Sunday.
Cincinnati (1-0) began its spring season in impressive fashion as the Bearcats scored a 7-0 win against Butler. The Bearcats won all six singles matches in straight sets, marking the first time since the 2017 season that Cincinnati did not drop a set in a contest. The Bearcats take to the road for a pair of matches this week. Cincinnati visits Indiana Saturday and is at Louisville Sunday.
UConn (1-0), which scored a fall dual match win against Quinnipiac, begins the spring portion of its 2018-19 season this weekend with a pair of matches against Ivy League opponents in Hanover, New Hampshire. The Huskies face Brown Saturday and will take on Dartmouth Sunday.
ECU (0-1) fell 7-0 to North Carolina State in the Pirates’ first dual match of the season. The doubles tandem of Alisa Diercksen/Lisa Hofbauer is ranked No. 49 in the Oracle/ITA list. The Pirates visit No.3 North Carolina Wednesday in their only dual match of the coming week.
Houston (1-1) bounced back from a 7-0 setback to Texas A&M with a 6-1 victory against Lamar, giving Helena Besovic her first head coaching victory with the Cougars. Houston will host Sam Houston State Friday and will entertain Incarnate Word Sunday.
Memphis (0-0) gets its 2019 spring season started this week at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Nashville, Tennessee. The Tigers will meet No. 2 Vanderbilt Saturday and will face either Oklahoma or Winthrop Sunday.
USF (1-2) sandwiched a 5-2 win against Florida Gulf Coast between setbacks to Florida Atlantic (4-3) and LSU (6-1) to begin the spring season. Senior Ana Roman Dominguez has gone 3-0 at No. 1 singles for the Bulls, including a pair of wins against nationally ranked opponents. USF takes part in the ITA Kickoff Weekend with a Friday match against No. 5 Georgia and a Saturday contest against either Kansas State or William & Mary.
SMU (0-2) dropped back-to-back heartbreakers to start the 2019 spring campaign as the Mustangs fell 4-3 to No. 18 Texas Tech and Oklahoma. Senior Anzhelika Shapovalova has been an early bright spot thanks to a 2-0 dual match record and a 4-0 overall mark in the spring. The Mustangs head to Palo Alto, California, for the ITA Kickoff Weekend as SMU faces Washington State Saturday and either No. 1 Stanford or St. Mary’s Sunday.
Temple (1-1) split a pair of matches in Virginia to start the season as the Owls scored a 6-1 win against Hampton and fell 4-3 to Old Dominion. A scheduled match against Penn State was postponed to a later date. Temple plays its home opener Saturday against Binghamton.
Tulane (1-0) opened its spring season with a 4-3 victory against Northwestern State in New Orleans. Christina Sisti provided the clinching win at No. 4 singles, earning a three-set victory. Tulane is back in action Saturday against McNeese State and will face Southern and Southeastern Louisiana Sunday.
Tulsa (5-1), which won The American title, advanced to the NCAA Championship round of 16 last year and is ranked No. 22 nationally to begin the 2019 campaign, has had a busy start to the season. The Golden Hurricane has already played six matches, earning five wins. Tulsa has scored wins against Louisiana Tech (7-0), Oral Roberts (6-0 and 4-0), Wyoming (7-0) and Arkansas Pine Bluff (7-0). The lone setback was a 6-1 decision to No. 9 Oklahoma State. Tulsa’s top doubles tandem of Martina Okalova/Vera Ploner has gone 4-1 in dual matches, 16-3 overall, and is ranked No. 4 nationally. Tulsa visits Evanston, Illinois, this weekend for the ITA Kickoff Classic. The Golden Hurricane faces No. 17 Miami (Fla.) Saturday and will meet either No. 19 Northwestern or No. 20 UCF Sunday.
Wichita State (0-0) begins its 2019 spring season Saturday as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Austin, Texas. The Shockers open with a Saturday matchup against Baylor and will face either No. 6 Texas or Middle Tennessee Sunday. Wichita State’s doubles tandem of Fatima Bizhukova/Marta Bellucco is ranked No. 19 nationally entering the spring season.
