PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league's weekly men's basketball honors for the 12th week of the college basketball season.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jarron Cumberland - Cincinnati - Jr. - G - Wilmington, Ohio
Cumberland earns his second-straight American Player of the Week honor, fourth this season and the sixth of his career. He ties UConn's Shabazz Napier for the most Player of the Week honors in conference history. The junior guard averaged 24.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists while shooting 45.2-percent from the field with six three-pointers and 14 free throws to help extend Cincinnati's win streak to six games with a pair of victories last week. He scored a game-high 23 points with five three-pointers and five assists to lead Cincinnati to an 88-64 home win over Tulsa. He then tallied a game-high 25 points, including 16 in the second half, as the Bearcats rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to earn a 72-68 victory at Temple. Cumberland has scored 20 or more points in 10 games this season, including five times in league play.
FRESHMEN OF THE WEEK
Alexis Yetna - USF - F - Paris, France
Yetna earns The American's top freshman honor for the fourth time this season and fourth time in the past six weeks. He averaged 17.0 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting 72.2-percent from the field and 66.7-percent from 3-point range in wins over Wichita State and ECU. Yetna scored a career-high 28 points and pulled down 13 rebounds while shooting 84.6-percent from the field in a road win at ECU. He made a career-high 11 field goals in the victory and added a 3-pointer, two assists and one steal. He leads The American with 10 double-doubles this season. USF improved to 4-4 in league play, which equals its conference win total over the past two seasons combined.
HONOR ROLL
Armoni Brooks - Houston - Jr. - G
Averaged 19.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 3-pointers in a 2-0 week for the Cougars. With wins vs. ECU and at Tulsa, Houston stands at 20-1 overall and is the first team to 20 wins and the best record in the country.
Quinton Rose - Temple - Jr. - G
Scored a career-high 26 points with five assists and three 3-pointers in a win over Memphis. Added 16 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in a close loss to rv/rv Cincinnati.
Jahmal McMurray - SMU - Sr. - G
Led the Mustangs to a comeback victory with 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting against Tulane. Knocked down 5-of-9 shots from downtown and added four assists, three rebounds, a steal and a block in 39 minutes.
Raynere Thornton - Memphis - Sr. - G
Nearly averaged a double-double in a 1-1 week that included a close loss at Temple and 20-point win over rv/- UCF. Had 11 points and 11 rebounds against the Knights and 14 points and eight boards at the Owls.
Christian Vital - UConn - So. - G
Had a game-high 21 points, five rebounds, five assists and one steal in the victory over Wichita State. Connected on 7-of-11 shots overall and 5-of-8 from 3-point range.
