PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly indoor track and field honors for the week ending January 27.
MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Kahmari Montgomery * Sr. * Houston * Plainfield, Ill.
Montgomery, the reigning American Athletic Conference indoor and outdoor 400-meter champion, is off to another strong campaign in 2019. The senior All-America sprinter broke a 14-year old 400m facility record set by 2008 Olympic gold medalist LaShawn Merritt at the Houston Invitational on Saturday. Montgomery won the 400-meter dash after clocking a time of 46.28 seconds, moving him up to No. 6 in the NCAA this season.
FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Hannah Miller * Jr. * SMU * Invercargill, New Zealand
Miller, The American’s 2018 indoor 3,000 and 5,000-meter champion, won two titles over the weekend at the Houston Invitational. Miller ran the second-fastest 5,000m in the conference this season, placing first of 15 after clocking 16:22.83. Her mark was good for a meet record and ranks 34th in the nation this year. Miller also won the mile in 4:54.93, pacing ahead of 39 competitors.
MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
David Bell * Sr. * USF * Jacksonville, Fla.
Bell placed first in the pole vault for a second-straight week, improving to No. 22 in the nation and first in The American this season. He cleared 5.30 meters (17' 4.5") to win the event at the Hawkeye Invitational on Saturday. Bell is a two-time American Athletic Conference Championship runner-up in the pole vault.
FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Taylor Scaife * Sr. * Houston * Moss Point, Miss.
Scaife continued an impressive final indoor season on campus, breaking her own school record in the weight throw for the third-consecutive week with her first-place toss of 22.65 meters (74' 3.75") at the Houston Invitational. She registered her record-setting mark on her final attempt of the competition, which also broke a 19-year old facility record by more than five feet. Scaife’s distance ranks No. 2 in the NCAA this season.
