PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly football honors for the eighth week of the 2019 college football season.
OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Kenneth Gainwell • Memphis • Fr. • RB • Yazoo City, Miss.
Gainwell rushed for a game-high 104 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and had game highs of nine receptions, 203 receiving yards and two TDs in Memphis’ 47-17 win against Tulane. Gainwell, who finished with 307 all-purpose yards, became the first FBS player with 100 rushing yards and 200 receiving yards in a game since Troy Edwards of Louisiana Tech in the 1997 season.
Shane Buechele • SMU • Jr. • QB • Arlington, Texas
Buechele, who was chosen as the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week Sunday, completed 30 of 53 passes for a career-high 457 yards and six touchdowns in a 45-21 win against No. 25 Temple keeping the Mustangs undefeated. Buechele became one of five FBS players with at least six touchdown passes in a game this season.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jacob Springer • Navy • Jr. • LB • Kansas City, Mo.
Springer led a Navy defense that held USF without a touchdown and limited the Bulls to 264 total yards in a 35-3 win. Springer finished with seven tackles, 3.0 sacks and a forced fumble to help the Midshipmen improve to 5-1.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dane Roy • Houston • Sr. • P • Bunyip, Australia
Roy averaged 47.5 yards on six punts and put three inside the 20-yard line to help Houston in the field position battle in the Cougars’ 24-17 win at UConn. Roy hit a 56-yard punt in the fourth quarter, which helped the Cougars protect a 17-10 lead.
