Memphis Earns Regular Season Title, Bracket Set for Women’s Soccer Championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 10/8 Memphis has clinched the American Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Regular Season Championship as league play wrapped up Thursday night (Oct. 31).
 
Memphis won the regular season crown with a total of 25 points and a conference record of 8-0-1 (16-1-1 overall). It is the first time the Tigers have captured the regular season title and will look to defend its tournament title from 2018.
 
The tournament features a single-elimination format with the first round on Sunday, Nov. 3. Memphis will host the semifinals on Nov. 7 and and the final on Nov. 10. The semifinals will be streamed live on the American Digital Network, while the final will air live on ESPNU. The tournament champion will earn the league’s automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship.
 
In the semifinals, third-seeded UCF (10-3-4 overall, 5-2-2 American) will host No. 6 seed Houston (6-13-0, 3-6-0), while fourth-seeded Cincinnati will entertain No. 5 seed SMU (11-6-1, 4-5-0) in the first-round matchups. Also earning a bye to the semifinals along with Memphis is No. 2 seed USF (12-4-0 overall, 7-2-0 American).
 
Memphis earned the No. 1 seed thanks to UCF’s 1-0 win over USF early Thursday evening in Orlando. Ellie Moreno scored the lone goal of the match and Caroline DeLisle made 10 saves in a shutout for the Knights.
 
The Tigers defeated Tulsa (8-11-0, 2-7-0), 3-0, after starting quickly with Lisa Pechersky and Tanya Boychuk both scoring within the first seven minutes. Elizabeth Moberg earned her conference-record 27th career shutout.
 
SMU clinched its tournament berth with three second-half goals to come from behind and defeat Houston, 3-2.
 
ECU (5-10-3, 2-5-2) and Cincinnati played to a scoreless draw. Melanie Stiles recorded seven saves for the Pirates, while Madison Less made one for the Bearcats.
 
Temple (5-9-5, 2-5-2) and UConn (6-8-3, 2-5-2) battled to a 1-1 draw in Storrs, Conn. Sofia Leone scored for the Huskies in the 28th minute, but was cancelled out by Hailey Gutowski’s 87th-minute strike.
