PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of its men’s and women’s tennis honors for the month of September.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Diogo Marques • So. • ECU • Setubal, Portugal
Marques went 8-0 in singles matches, including a flight title at the Liberty Invitational to begin his 2019-20 season. He rallied from one-set deficits in three of his four matches at the Liberty Invitational to defeat opponents from James Madison, Richmond, Elon and Liberty before adding four more singles wins at the UNCG Fall Invitational. Marques won three of his four singles contests in straight sets at UNCG and was a combined 3-3 in doubles matches in the two events.

A number of American Athletic Conference players will be in action in early October at the 2019 Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships. The men’s singles draw includes SMU’s Carles Sarrio, Tulane’s Ewan Moore, Tulsa’s Kody Pearson and Juan Pablo Cenoz, and UCF’s Gabriel Decamps. The men’s doubles bracket will include Wichita State’s Marius Frosa/Murkel Dellien, who reached the NCAA quarterfinals last season, along with UCF’s Trey Hilderbrand/Bogdan Pavel and Tulsa’s Stefan Hampe/Tom Thelwall-Jones.
A number of other players from The American may reach the main draw through the qualifying rounds.
Competition in the main draw begins Oct. 9 and concludes Oct. 13.
The 2020 American Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will be held in April at the Michael D Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The women’s championship takes place April 15-18, while the men’s championship will be played April 16-19.
