Four teams from the American Athletic Conference were included in the first edition of the College Football Playoff selection committee rankings of the 2019 season.
Cincinnati was the highest ranked of The American's quartet at No. 20. Memphis was one spot back at No. 21, while Navy was No. 24 and SMU No. 25.
Among the 10 FBS conferences, only the Big Ten (six) and SEC (five) had more ranked teams than The American. The Big 12 also had four ranked teams, while the ACC and Pac-12 had two each.
The initial 2019 announcement marks the second time that The American has had four teams in a CFP ranking. The conference had No. 20 Navy, No. 21 Memphis, No. 22 Temple and No. 24 Houston in the ranking of Nov. 10, 2015.
Cincinnati achieved its highest ranking in CFP history as the Bearcats are listed for the first time since Nov. 13, 2018. Memphis was last ranked in the 2017 season, when the Tigers appeared in each of the six CFP rankings. Navy is in for the first time since 2016, when the Midshipmen were in the final three rankings. SMU is in the CFP rankings for the first time since the formation of the playoff in 2014.
