11.09.19

TULSA, Okla. -- Seth Boomer came off the bench to complete 6 of 10 passes for 87 yards and the tying touchdown, and Jacob Rainey added the game-winning points on a 23-yard field goal with 5:09 left as Tulsa overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to take a 34-31 win against UCF Friday at H.A. Chapman Stadium.

The Golden Hurricane trailed 28-17 at halftime and went into the locker room not long after starting quarterback Zach Smith left the game with an apparent leg injury.

But Boomer helped Tulsa chip away in the third quarter as he engineered an eight-play, 50-yard drive that was capped ty T.K. Wilkerson's 2-yard touchdown run to make it 28-24.

Boomer hit Sam Crawford for a 17-yard touchdown with 9:14 left to tie the score at 31-31. Rainey missed his first chance to give Tulsa the lead when his 35-yard field goal attempt bounced off the upright with 7:39 left. But Rainey got another shot after Reggie Robinson II picked off a UCF pass and returned it to the Knight 18-yard line. Tulsa advanced to the UCF 6, and Rainey's 23-yard attempt split the uprights to give the Golden Hurricane a 34-31 lead.

Tulsa held the high-scoring Knights to three second-half points.

Smith was 10-of-14 for 127 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game with his injury.

Tulsa snapped a five-game slide with the win as the Golden Hurricane improved to 3-7 overall and 1-5 in the American Athletic Conference.

UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel was 23-of-38 for 290 yards and a touchdown, but was intercepted twice as the Knights fell to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in The American.
