MEMPHIS, Tenn.--Top-seeded Memphis defeated No. 5 seed SMU, 4-2, Friday night (Nov. 8) to advance to the final of the American Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship.
With the win, the Tigers (17-1-1) set up a rematch of last year’s tournament final with No. 2 seed USF (13-4) on Sunday (Nov. 10). Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. Eastern and the game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
Memphis started off quickly as Lisa Pechersky scored less than two minutes into the match off a feed from Tanya Boychuk. Boychuk doubled the Tiger lead in the 39th minute when she converted a penalty kick.
SMU (12-7-1) cut the lead to one when Allie Thornton scored in the 49th minute. She was assisted by Hailey Bishop. Memphis regained a two-goal cushion when Stasia Mallin set up Kimberley Smit’s 52nd minute goal.
The Mustangs again cut the lead to one in the 67th minute when Thornton passed to Jewel Boland, who found the back of the net.
Clarissa Larisey closed out the scoring in the 90th minute after SMU sent everyone up in a last ditch effort to find an equalizer.
The teams had 17 shots each and both Memphis’ Elizabeth Moberg and SMU’s Tatum Sutherland each recorded seven saves.
