American Squads Go 4-0 on Sunday

All four American Athletic Conference men's basketball teams in action on Sunday (Dec. 1) picked up victories.

UConn 64, Maine 40 - Box Score

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- UConn turned up the defensive pressure on Maine Sunday and turned a close game into a rout.

Freshman James Bouknight, playing at home for the first time, scored 15 points and UConn forced 28 turnovers in Sunday's 64-40 win.

Alterique Gilbert added 13 points and Tyler Polley had 12 for the Huskies (5-2), who were playing in Connecticut for the first time in two weeks.

Andrew Fleming led all scorers with 16 points for Maine (2-5), which shot just 35% from the floor and made just six baskets in the second half.

''We were active for the most part on the defensive end, which created some turnovers and got us going a little bit offensively,'' said Gilbert.

UConn led by seven points at halftime, but forced 10 turnovers during 17-2 run that turned a 35-30 lead into a 52-32 advantage with 11 1/2 minutes to play.

The Huskies scored 28 points off Maine giveaways, while Maine could manage just six points off UConn's eight turnovers.

Maine was playing without point guard Sergio El Darwich, who rolled his ankle on Wednesday in a loss to Virginia.

''UConn came out and really got in our shorts today and really made it tough on us,'' coach Richard Barron said. ''I think it showed we were missing our point guard today. They took advantage of that and they should. There's no pity in this game.''

It was the first chance for UConn fans to get a look at Bouknight, who was suspended for the Huskies' first three games this season. The freshman had just four points in the first half, but played better after intermission He brought the crowd to its feet late in the game when he followed up his own missed jumper in the lane with a dunk.

''It's just something I do with my athleticism, just trying to play hard and stay out on the floor,'' he said. ''I've just got to figure out how to make plays when it's not dropping.''

Brenda Adams scored 11 points. He and Christian Vital each had four steals for the Huskies.

Gilbert hit consecutive 3-points to give UConn an early 11-2 lead over the Black Bears,

But Maine, which was held to 26 in a loss to Virginia on Friday, scored 10 of the next 12 and held UConn scoreless for more than 6 1/2 minutes to stay in the game.

A layup by Maine's Nedeljko Prijovic sent the teams into halftime with UConn up 31-24.

''I was thrilled with the first two minutes and happier with the last 20,'' said UConn coach Dan Hurley. ''We could have really broke it open in the first half and had a performance that we could feel a lot better about.''

Tulane 82, Southern 65 - Box Score

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- K.J. Lawson scored a career-high 30 points on 10-of-12 shooting and Tulane beat Southern 82-65 on Sunday. Teshaun Hightower added 21 points, while Christion Thompson almost recorded a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Amel Kuljuhovic had 15 points for the Jaguars (3-5). Lamarcus Lee added 11 points.

Temple 66, Davidson 53 - Box Score

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) -- Nate Pierre-Louis scored 15 points and Quinton Rose added 14 as Temple beat Davidson 66-53 in the fifth-place game Sunday at the Orlando Invitational.

Jake Forrester, who received an NCAA waiver Tuesday that made him eligible to play this season, had eight of his season-high 10 points during the second half for the Owls (6-1).

Forrester, who played 13 games as a freshman last season for Indiana, appeared in all three contests in the tournament.

Davidson (3-5) got 16 points from Luka Brajkovic and Carter Collins had 12. Kellan Grady, who averaged 21.5 points in the Wildcats' first two games of the tourney, was held to 11.

Hyunjung Lee hit a 3 at the buzzer as Davidson took a 33-30 halftime lead.

Temple was beaten by No. 5 and tournament champion Maryland 76-69 before downing Texas A&M 65-42 in its first two invitational games.

Davidson lost 73-63 to runner-up Marquette and beat Fairfield 67-56.

Rose almost had a triple-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

UCF 77, Charleston 56 - Box Score

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Collin Smith posted 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Central Florida defeated College of Charleston 77-56 in the Wooden Legacy fifth-place game on Sunday.

Dre Fuller Jr. added 13 points for Central Florida (5-2), Brandon Mahan 12 and Frank Bertz 10.

The Knights defeated the Cougars 72-71 in Orlando on Nov. 23 when Smith had a career-high 23 points, including two free throws with 22 seconds left.

Grant Riller had 17 points for the Cougars (4-4) after netting 20 in the first meeting. He has scored in double figures in 36 straight games. Riller is third on the Cougars' career scoring list with 1,935 points, 200 behind second-place Ken Gustafson.
