Eight American Athletic Conference men's baskeball teams were in action on Saturday (Dec. 21).

Towson 86, Tulane 82 (OT) - Box Score

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Brian Fobbs knocked down 24 points with 12 rebounds, his third career double-double, and made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 20 seconds as Towson narrowly beat Tulane 86-82 in overtime on Saturday.

Nicolas Timberlake scored a career-high 15 points and his block of a Tulane 3-pointer with 23 seconds remaining helped keep the Green Wave at bay. Fobbs shot 9 for 10 from the foul line, and Allen Betrand added 18 points for Towson (6-6).

Teshaun Hightower scored a career-high 31 points for the Green Wave (8-4), including a pair of free throws that made it an 84-82 game with eight seconds left. Tulane fouled Fobbs on the next inbounds and the Towson senior made both, putting the game out of reach.

Nic Thomas and Christion Thompson each added 19 points for Tulane.

There were five lead changes and six ties in a game that was a close battle throughout. Tulane buried 14 of 30 3-pointers but were outrebounded 44-28 as Towson owned a 28-14 edge on points in the paint.

No. 19 Florida State 66, USF 62 - Box Score

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida State had trouble making a shot. USF had trouble getting a shot.

The No. 19-ranked Seminoles used smothering defense to overcome a 10-point deficit in the final seven minutes and beat South Florida 66-60 Saturday in the Orange Bowl Classic.

The Seminoles shot only 40 percent but matched a season high by forcing 24 turnovers, including seven as they outscored the Bulls 19-3 down the stretch.

''When we went down 10, I thought we became more aggressive,'' Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said. ''Our aggressiveness generated some easy baskets off turnovers.''

The Seminoles (10-2) deployed double teams along the sidelines and near midcourt to repeatedly force South Florida mistakes down the stretch.

''We had a plan to trap the ball screen,'' said guard Anthony Polite, chosen the game's most valuable player. ''That led to a few steals that gave us energy, and we were able to get some easy baskets in transition. That gave us momentum.''

South Florida (6-6) lost to a ranked team for the 27th consecutive time since 2012.

''The guys are ticked off because we lost that game, which is good for me to able to coach them, because they are not going to accept the fact that we just competed and hung in there,'' coach Brian Gregory said. ''They want to take another step.''

With 13 steals and 21 points off turnovers, the Seminoles won despite a poor shooting effort, including 7 for 27 from 3-point range. They also were outrebounded by 14 by the Bulls.

''They outplayed us for the majority of the game,'' Hamilton said. ''They brought a lot more than we had asked for.''

RaiQuan Gray had 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals for Florida State. Polite, Trent Forrest and M.J. Walker also scored 11 points apiece.

A flurry of nine points in 39 seconds by the Bulls - including a pair of 3s and two free technical foul free throws - helped them lead 57-47 with 6:32 to go. But they didn't score another field goal until garbage time with 3 seconds left, and committed turnovers on four consecutive possessions as the Seminoles pulled ahead.

Devin Vassell's jumper with two minutes left put Florida State in front to stay.

Michael Durr had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Bulls, but they shot just 3 for 15 from 3-point range. Four of their turnovers came on shot-clock violations.

(rv) Wichita State 73, (rv/25) VCU 63 - Box Score

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- Grant Sherfield scored 14 points as Wichita State beat VCU 73-63 on Saturday.

Jaime Echenique had 14 points and three blocks for Wichita State (10-1), which earned its fourth consecutive win. Jamarius Burton added 10 points and eight rebounds and five assists, while Tyson Etienne added 10 points.

Marcus Evans had 15 points and five steals for the Rams (9-3). Issac Vann added 11 points. Nah'Shon Hyland had 9 points.

Temple 78, Rider 66 - Box Score

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Alani Moore II made five 3-pointers and scored 15 points on Saturday to lead Temple past Rider 78-66 to end the Broncs five-game win streak.

All but one of Moore's 11 shot attempts came from beyond the 3-point line. Jake Forrester scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting, Josh Pierre-Louis scored 12, Nate Pierre-Louis 11 and Quinton Rose distributed nine assists and scored nine points.

Rider led Temple (8-3) 41-33 at intermission and extended it to 51-37 on Stevie Jordan's three-point play 4 1/2 minutes into the second half. But Temple took control with a 21-0 run that lasted the next 5 1/2 minutes and the Owls were never threatened.

Frederic Scott led the Broncs (7-2) with 17 points, Willy Nunez Jr. 13 and Dimencio Vaughn 11.

No. 11/13 Memphis 77, Jackson State 49 - Box Score

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Memphis had a tough time handling the ball. But it could rebound and it could shoot.

And that was enough for an eighth straight victory.

Precious Achiuwa had 20 points and nine rebounds and DJ Jeffries added 13 points for No. 11 Memphis, which defeated Jackson State 77-49 on Saturday.

This was the first game for the Tigers since top recruit James Wiseman - already suspended by the NCAA - decided to leave the team and prepare for the NBA.

Memphis (10-1) weathered 28 turnovers by converting 32 of its 58 shots when it wasn't throwing away the basketball, mishandling dribbles or bobbling passes.

Memphis also controlled the glass, outrebounding Jackson State 43-30. Coach Penny Hardaway could accept some of the turnovers, saying they come with the up-tempo, free-flowing style of play. But he was less tolerant of his team handing out only 16 assists, six by sophomore guard Alex Lomax.

''Unforced turnovers, that comes along with giving them their freedom to play basketball on the offensive end and to make the right decision for yourself and for a teammate,'' Hardaway said before adding: ''They just didn't make the right choices.''

The teams finished with combined 53 turnovers. Jackson State has a reputation of turning over teams, forcing opponents into 18.5 a game.

''We can force teams into turnovers. ... But the other thing is we don't normally turn the ball over,'' Jackson State coach Wayne Brent said. ''They forced us into 25 turnovers and we didn't score well.''

Tristan Jarrett led Jackson State (3-9) with 20 points, while Roland Griffin scored 15. The pair combined for 14 of 41 from the floor, contributing to Jackson State's 32% shooting.

Memphis held a double-digit lead throughout the second half, but had trouble putting away Jackson State because of its ballhandling. A four-point play by Tyler Harris with about seven minutes left extended the Memphis lead to 62-42, providing more than enough room to keep the winning streak going.

''This team deserves a lot of credit for everything we have gone through to be on this winning streak and be 10-1 right now'' Hardaway said.

(-/rv) Oklahoma 53, UCF 52 - Box Score

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- Brady Manek grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 13 points, including a critical 3-pointer late, and Oklahoma overcame poor shooting to hold off UCF 53-52 on Saturday.

Manek's 3 with 1:20 to play put the Sooners (8-3) up 53-45, but the Knights scored four unanswered points while the Sooners missed two shots and a 3-pointer at the buzzer by UCF's Dre Fuller Jr. missed.

''Unbelievable effort and a great response by our team when our shooting wasn't there,'' Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said. ''Brady hit that big shot late which was huge for us.''

Kristian Doolittle scored 12 points for Oklahoma (8-3), whose 53 points was their lowest scoring output this season behind the 54 points scored in a loss at Stanford.

''It's very clear we have a lot of work to do and get things figured out,'' Kruger said. ''We got to get a lot more flow offensively and keep working and improving defensively.''

Fuller scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds for UCF (10-2), which saw its six-game win streak end. Fuller's 3-pointer from the baseline sailed over the rim as time expired.

''We got away from the things that were successful for us, and we have to learn from that,'' UCF coach Johnny Dawkins said. ''Our guys have been in games like this all year. They have been scrapping and have given us a chance to win all year, including tonight.''

Dazon Ingram had 10 points and 14 rebounds and made four assists for the Knights and Collin Smith had 10 rebounds.

Colorado State 111, Tulsa 104 (3OT) - Box Score

TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Isaiah Stevens had a season-high 26 points including a 3-pointer that put his team on top for good as Colorado State defeated Tulsa 111-104 in triple overtime on Saturday.

The teams were tied 104-all in the third overtime when Stevens drained a 3-pointer to give the Rams (8-6) a 107-104 edge with 2:53 left. Tulsa failed to score the rest of the period.

Kendle Moore added 23 points for the Rams. David Roddy had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Nico Carvacho added 15 points and 18 rebounds.

CSU led 31-27 at the break and were up 76-68 with 1:08 remaining in the second half after 14 lead changes. But Tulsa closed in after that and Jeriah Horne hit a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left to tie it at 80-all and force the first overtime.

Both teams reached the 100-point threshold for the first time this season. Tulsa's 53 second-half points were a season high for the team.

Horne scored a career-high 28 points for the Golden Hurricane (8-4). Martins Igbanu added 17 points. Lawson Korita had 16 points.

(rv) Iowa 77, Cincinnati 70 - Box Score

CHICAGO (AP) -- CJ Fredrick had 21 points, Joe Wieskamp had 16 and Luka Garza had 12 points and 13 rebounds as Iowa pulled away late for a 77-70 victory over Cincinnati on Saturday night after losing a 15-point second-half lead.

Bakari Evelyn had 15 points off the bench as Iowa (9-3) won its third straight and eighth in 10 games. The Hawkeyes closed with a 15-6 run over the final 4 1/2 minutes.

Jarron Cumberland had 18 points for Cincinnati (7-5), which has dropped three of four.

Cumberland has 1,496 career points to move past Yancy Gates (1,485) for 15th place on Cincinnati's all-time scoring list.

The teams met in the first round of the NCAA tournament last March, with Iowa winning 79-72 in Columbus, Ohio.

Iowa was playing its first game since senior guard Jordan Bohannon had season-ending surgery on his left hip on Thursday. Bohannon, who had the same procedure on his right hip in May, averaged 8.8 points and 3.3 assists in 10 games. He is a career 40.3% 3-point shooter in 112 games with the Hawkeyes.

Iowa scored eight straight points late in the first half for a 35-27 advantage with under two minutes to play. Fredrick, who had 10 first-half points, started the run with a short jumper and then Wieskamp and Garza hit back-to-back 3-pointers.

The Hawkeyes led 39-31 at halftime.

Iowa had another run of eight straight early in the second half - five by Garza - to open up a 50-35 lead, its biggest of the game.

But then the Hawkeyes went scoreless for six minutes, 10 seconds as Cincinnati scored 10 straight - capped by a 3-pointer by Mika Adams-Woods - to pull within 50-45 with 11 minutes remaining.

Iowa, which missed the front end of two 1-and-1 opportunities during the drought, ended the scoreless streak when Connor McCaffery made two of three free throws after being fouled on a 3-pointer with 10:41 to play.

The Bearcats continued their surge with defensive pressure, forcing Iowa into turnovers on four straight possessions at one point. Keith Williams tied the score at 62 with a pair of free throws with 5:35 to go and then gave Cincinnati the lead on the next possession with a follow basket off his own miss.

Wieskamp then hit a 3-pointer to put the Hawkeyes back on top, 65-64. After a miss on the other end, Evelyn hit a 3 to make it 68-64 with 3:51 left.

After taking the lead, Cincinnati suddenly went ice cold from the field, going scoreless on seven of the next eight possessions as Iowa held on.
