UConn Sweeps Weekly Women's Basketball Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s first weekly women’s basketball honors, for the week ending Sunday, Dec. 8.
 
Player of the Week
Megan Walker * Jr. * F * UConn

Walker repeated as the Player of the Week after averaging 27.5 points, nine rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per game in UConn’s 2-0 week. Against Seton Hall on Wednesday, she poured in a game and season-high 29 points on 10-of-21 (47.6 percent) shooting, grabbed five boards and dished out three assists as the Huskies won 92-78. She followed with a 26-point, 13-rebound, four-assist and two-steal performance as UConn cruised past Notre Dame, 81-57. Walker is the only player in The American averaging over 20 points per game (22.1).
 
Freshman of the Week
Aubrey Griffin * Fr. * G * UConn

Griffin had a breakout week, posting her first career double-double for UConn in the Huskies’ dominating 92-78 win at Seton hall. She scored 25 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and 10-of-12 (83.3 percent) from the foul line and totaled 12 rebounds, with half on the offensive end. In 17 minutes against Notre Dame on Sunday, Griffin did a little of everything, finishing with four points, three rebounds and an assist.

Averaged 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in the Bearcats’ 2-0 week, including wins over VCU and Miami (OH); netted the buzzer-beating game-winner in Cincinnati’s comeback win at VCU and scored a career-high 18 points against Miami
 
Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu * Jr * F * Memphis
Registered her third career double-double in Memphis’ lone game of the week, a 77-52 win over UAB; scored 13 points and pulled down 13 rebounds and led the Tigers with a plus/minus of +23
 
Maria Alvarez * Fr. * G * USF
Led all players with 18 points – all coming from beyond the arc – in USF’s dominating 80-29 win over Alabama State; went 6-of-11 from long range, dished out three assists and totaled three rebounds
 
Mia Davis * Jr. * F * Temple
Posted two double-doubles, including a 14-point, 13-rebounding outing in Temple’s six-point loss to No. 6 South Carolina; opened the week with a 26-point, 15-rebound performance at Towson, converting 15-of-18 from the charity stripe
 
Mariah McCully * Jr. * G * Wichita State
Reached double-figures in both of Wichita State’s games last week, scoring 13 against No. 22 Missouri State and a career-high 25 in a 63-52 win over Eastern Michigan; for the week, averaged 19 points, two assists and 1.5 steals per game
