Highlights
Ohio State 16, Cincinnati 6
The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team opened its 2019 campaign Friday afternoon at chilly Gettler Stadium and fell to visiting Ohio State, 16-6. Sam Mlkvy netted a trio of goals and Monica Borzillo chipped in a pair of scores and an assist as the Bearcats slipped to 0-1 on the year while the Buckeyes opened their season 1-0.
The Buckeyes used several runs to put the game out of reach, opening play with a trios of goals before the Bearcats were able to respond. Sophie Baez scored the first two goals in the game with Baley Parrott adding another to stake the visitors to a 3-0 lead just eight minutes in. Mlkvy ended the run with a goal of her own as she charged in on goal and fired a low shot into the net to make it 3-1.
OSU regained the momentum and scored the next four goals for a 7-1 advantage as Liza Hernandez scored two of the goals with just over five minutes remaining in the half. Mlkvy once again found the back of the net to halt the Buckeye run, but OSU added two more in the final minute to take a 10-3 at the break.
Following halftime, both teams traded a goal with Borzillo striking for the first time in the game after OSU made it 11-3. The Buckeyes netted a pair of goals after that, including one with a man advantage, making it 13-4 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the contest. The two-goal streak was snapped by the Bearcats as Borzillo found Nause in front of the cage before Nause found the back of the cage for her first goal. But, the Buckeyes added a trio of goals late before Mlkvy nabbed her hat trick with less than three minutes to go to bring about the final margin, 16-6.
ECU 13, Winthrop 12
In front of the second largest crowd in program history, the ECU women's lacrosse team topped Winthrop 13-12 on Friday afternoon inside Johnson Stadium.
ECU (1-0), which is in only its second season, wins its season and home opener for the first time. The Pirates were led by sophomores Brittany Borchers (two goals and three assists), Ally Stanton (three goals and an assist) and Megan Pallozzi (three goals) as well as freshman Hannah Rzempoluch (one goal, three assists and six draw controls).
The Pirates could not have asked for a better start to the game. After nearly four minutes of scoreless action to start the game, Pallozzi finally broke the ice by scoring the first goal. That was quickly followed by goals from Liz Blumthal and Rzempoluch.
Trailing by a pair of goals in the second half, ECU began to fight back. First, Pallozzi completed her hat trick with an unassisted goal. Nicole Legar tied the game minutes later when she scored off a free position shot and then ECU regained the lead when Camryn Pennypacker scored off a feed from Rzempoluch.
Winthrop tied the score at 12:51. Two minutes later, Nicole LeGar scored her second goal from a pass for Borchers followed by a free position goal by Borchers. After a Winthrop goal narrowed the gap, Borchers scored her second goal with 6:25 left.
As ECU tried to hang onto its lead, sophomore Christina White continually stonewalled Winthrop. The goalkeeper finished with 10 saves on the day, none bigger than a point blank stop she made in the final minute.
Syracuse 18, UConn 6
Opening the season on the road for the second consecutive year, the UConn women's lacrosse team fell in its 2019 season opener, 18-6, to No. 13 Syracuse on Friday afternoon at the Carrier Dome.

Delaware 7, Temple 4
Despite a huge advantage in shots on goal, Temple lacrosse was unable to convert on enough opportunities in a 7-4 loss to visiting Delaware (1-0) in the season opener for both teams.
The Owls (0-1) had 24 shots on goal to the Blue Hens' 13, but Delaware goalkeeper Kate Brewster made 20 saves to frustrate Temple for most of the game. Temple held Delaware scoreless in the second half, but was only able to get one goal closer after trailing 7-3 at halftime. Draw controls hurt the Owls in the first half, with Delaware getting eight to Temple's three.
Junior Maddie Gebert scored twice for Temple, with senior Olivia Thompson and sophomore Jen Rodzewich also netting one goal each. Senior Amber Lambeth assisted on two of the Owls' goals, while junior Julia Ryan also notched an assist. In goal for the Owls was junior Maryn Lowell who made six saves.

Kavanagh once again found the back of the net, picking up her third goal of the game with 19 minutes remaining. She then tied her career-best with her fourth goal at the 16:52 mark, putting the Gators ahead 12-6.
Colorado put two goals up on the board to cut the deficit to four, but it was all Gators from then on out. Haus added two more goals to her total, while Ronbeck and Brianna Harris helped put the game away for Florida with a goal apiece in the final 11 minutes.

Cincinnati 19, Kent State 8
Three players tallied at least four goals, including Monica Borzillo's seven, as the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team rebounded from its season-opening loss to hand Kent State a 19-8 decision on a snowy Sunday at Gettler Stadium. Sam Mlkvy and Gianna Napoletano each added four goals in the game as the Bearcats (1-1) downed the Golden Flashes (0-1) in their first collegiate lacrosse game as KSU opened its inaugural season Sunday.
Borzillo scored seven goals, one shy of her single-game school record while chipping in four assists to record 11 points, the most in a single game in program history
With the snow falling, the Bearcats took an early 1-0 lead as Mlkvy scored her first before the Golden Flashes answered right back just over one minute later to knot the score at 1-1. Form there, UC tallied the next three goals with Sains (1) and Borzillo (2) each scoring goals to push the Bearcats ahead, 4-1. After a KSU man-up goal made it 4-2, the Bearcats added two more as Mlkvy and Borzillo scored once again. A pair of KSU goals pulled the guests to within two (6-4) before each team traded a pair of goals to see the game sit 8-6 in favor of the hosts at halftime.
In the second half, the Bearcats began to pull away as they scored the opening three goals to build an 11-6 lead. In that run, Adams, Borzillo and Napoletano each found the back of the cage before a Golden Flash goal halted the run with a goal that made it 11-7. But, from there, UC would score five in a row and eight of the final nine goals in the contest to take the game, 19-8.
ECU 18, Gardner-Webb 11
A record day on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball helped the ECU women's lacrosse team top Gardner-Webb 18-11 on Sunday afternoon inside Johnson Stadium.
ECU (2-0) has already matched its win total from its inaugural season and has now won consecutive games for the first time. Brittany Borchers (two goals and four assists) and Megan Pallozzi (four goals and two assists) both finished with six points, as Borchers' four helpers are a school record, as the Pirates had a program-best 18 goals. On the defensive side, Christina White set a new ECU standard with 16 saves.
The Pirates grabbed control of the game almost immediately. Pallozzi opened the scoring just 1:04 into the game. After the Bulldogs answered, ECU scored three straight goals, including a pair on free position shots.
In the opening minutes of the second half, the two teams traded blows. ECU threw the first punch when Borchers and Nicole Legar scored on back-to-back free position shots. Gardner-Webb retaliated with a pair of goals of its own.
After a nearly five minute scoreless stretch, ECU was able to salt the game away with a six-minute burst. First, Bowman scored off a pass from Borchers. Soon after, Borchers and Legar scored again on free position shots. Finally, Camryn Pennypacker added a free position goal of her own, giving ECU its largest lead of the game at 15-8.
