Highlights
Several American Athletic Conference teams wrapped up their indoor track and field regular season slates over the weekend with under two weeks left before The American Championships from Feb. 22-23. The race towards the top of the league’s performance lists continued, as numerous school and personal records fell. The No. 4 Houston men highlighted the action across the conference, running for two top NCAA times this season (400m and 4x400m relay).
- Houston had several remarkable performances on the men’s and women’s side, as the Cougars sent their squads to three different meets. Obi Igbokwe shot atop the world leaderboard in the 400-meter dash with a blistering time of 45.35 Friday in the first of two days of action at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational. Trumaine Jefferson (long jump) and Jermaine Holt (open 400-meter dash) also took wins for the Cougars on Friday.
Houston's Taylor Scaife continued her undefeated start to the season at the Howie Ryan Invitational inside Yeoman Fieldhouse. Scaife won her fifth weight throw of the season as she took the title with a throw of 68-3.00 (20.80). Houston's men 4x400-meter relay closed out the weekend with a top-notch win on Saturday. The winning time of 3:01.51 is the second-fastest time in American history and the fourth fastest in world history. The time trails only the times run by USC (3:00.77), Texas A&M (3:01.39) and Florida (3:01.43) ran at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships.
- Cincinnati’s Loretta Blaut won the high jump and Aaron Bienenfeld broke his own school record in the 5,000m on Friday at the Music City Challenge. Blaut cleared 1.76 meters to win her event, while Bienenfeld ran a PR of 14:08.81 in the 5,000m. Irati Mitxelena broke the Bearcats’ triple jump record on Saturday (13.17m), which ranks No. 1 in The American and 12th in the nation this year. Cincinnati completed the weekend sweep in the triple jump with Andre Wright winning the men’s event after clearing 15.57 meters.
- UConn competed at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston. Todd Stueber won the shot put with a throw that traveled 16.68 meters. On the women’s side, Kat Surin won the 400-meter dash with her time of 53.32 seconds, and Divine Oladipo placed first in the shot put with her distance of 16.76 meters. The UConn women also sent athletes to compete at the Husky Invitational in Washington.
- In its last meet before the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, ECU captured four event titles at the Darius Dixon Memorial on the campus of Liberty University. Senior Courtney Warner picked up a pair of event crowns in the 60m and 200m, crossing the finish line in respective times of 7.53 and 24.44. Classmate Grace Sullivan also performed well, winning the mile run in a time of 4:56.82 before capturing second in the 1,000m at 3:00.46. On the men's side, senior D'Ante Yarborough won the 60-meter hurdles with his fastest time of the season at 8.11.
- Julian Sanchez-Pinto set the 5,000-meter run record for Memphis at the Music City Challenge with his time of 14:31.49. Jordan Wesner won the men's high jump title with a 7-1.5 (2.17m) effort. Another record fell for the Tigers on Saturday after Saida Burns-Moore recorded a triple jump distance of 42-8.5 (13.01m) for a third-place finish in the event.
- USF captured eight individual titles on Friday at the Samford Invitational. Jada Massie (60m), Adriana Janic (60mH), Imani Carmouche (high jump), Stephanie Lambeth (pole vault), Maurice Nock (200m), Randall Ceneus (400m), David Bell (pole vault) and Tequon Terry (long jump) each placed first in their respective events.
- SMU’s Hannah Miller set a school record in the 3000-meter run, as the Mustangs completed competition at the Music City Challenge. The junior ran a blistering 9:21.44 to win the event and improve on her school record, while moving to No. 1 on the conference’s performance list this season.

Her height leads The American and ranks 11th nationally this season. Her mark was one of nine personal bests this weekend during the team's time in New Mexico and in Nashville, Tennessee, at the Music City Challenge.
- Tulsa split its team, sending athletes to compete at both the Iowa State Classic and Indoor Gorilla Classic on Friday and Saturday.
