PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly indoor track and field honors for the week ending February 10.
MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Obi Igbokwe * Sr. * Houston * Houston, Texas
Igbokwe had two stunning performances over the weekend at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational. Making his 400-meter dash debut for Houston after transferring from Arkansas, Igbokwe ran the fastest time in the NCAA this season and shot atop the world leaderboard after clocking 45.35 seconds on Friday. The senior returned to the track Saturday as part of Houston’s 4x400-meter relay that took first place and ran for the fastest time in the country this year (3:01.51). The Cougars’ time also ranks fourth all-time in world history.
FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Hannah Miller * Jr. * SMU * Invercargill, New Zealand
Miller, the 2018 conference 3,000-meter run champion, continues to shine on the track, as the junior ran the fastest 3,000m in The American this year. She placed first of 53 at the Music City Challenge, as her time of 9:21.44 set the Mustangs’ record in the event.
MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Andre Wright * So. * Cincinnati * Westminster, S.C.
Wright won the triple jump at the Music City Challenge, moving up to No. 2 on the conference’s performance list and No. 32 in the nation with his distance of 15.57 meters (51’1”). Wright is the third man in Cincinnati history to clear 50 feet in the triple jump. He registered another top-10 finish with his distance of 7.15 meters (23’5.5”) in the long jump.
FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Rebekah Markel * Sr. * Tulane * Lafayette, La.
Markel has had tremendous success in the pole vault this season, most recently setting The American and Tulane’s record after clearing 4.33 meters (14-2.5) on her second attempt at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational on Saturday. A week ago, she cleared 4.32 meters to set the league’s record. In addition to leading the conference, her height ranks 11th in the NCAA this season.
