PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of its weekly men’s and women’s tennis honors for the week-ending Feb. 10.

Pearson won a pair of singles matches in straight sets as Tulsa split a pair of dual matches last week. He took a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win at No. 4 singles against No. 6 Texas, beating a previously undefeated player and providing the Golden Hurricane’s only team point against the Longhorns. He followed with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory at No. 3 singles in Tulsa’s 4-3 win against Cornell, improving his team-leading singles record to 11-1 in dual matches.

Tulane’s men’s team is ranked No. 19 in the Oracle/ITA rankings of Feb. 6. The Green Wave will play in the National Team Indoor Championship Feb. 15-18 in Chicago. Pairings for the championship will be announced Feb. 13. The next men’s tennis team, singles and doubles rankings will be announced by the ITA Feb. 19.

The 2019 American Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will be held in April at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. The women’s championship takes place April 17-20, while the men’s championship will be played April 18-21.
MEN’S TENNIS UPDATE
UCF (1-5) picked up its first win of the spring with a 4-3 decision at Indiana, but fell 6-1 to No. 16 Michigan to close the two-match swing against teams from the Big Ten. UCF, which has faced three top-25 opponents in its first six matches, does not have a match scheduled until March 3 against Miami (Fla.), which will be part of the USTA College Match Day series on the Tennis Channel.
UConn (5-4) won both of its dual matches last week as the Huskies scored a 6-1 win at Sacred Heart and took a 4-3 decision against Hofstra. Freshman Christian Provenzano provided the clinching point against Hofstra with a three-set win at No. 6 singles. The Huskies will host three matches this week, beginning with Friday’s visit from ECU. UConn welcomes Fairfield Saturday and Bucknell Sunday.
ECU (7-1) bounced back from its only loss of the season with a pair of wins last week as the Pirates took a 4-3 victory against Richmond before scoring a 4-0 decision against Appalachian State. The Pirates continue to get production across its lineup as the No. 3 through No. 6 positions have a combined 26-3 record in dual matches. Will Bissett is 6-0, playing primarily at No. 6, while Wisse Jonker is 7-1 at the No. 3 position. The Pirates head to New England this week for a Friday match at UConn, a Saturday trip to Boston University and a Sunday contest at Bryant.
Memphis (8-2) split a pair of dual matches last week as the Tigers took a 7-0 win against Michigan State and fell 4-3 to LSU. Junior Jan Pallares went 2-0 in singles play with a straight-set win against the Spartans and a three-set decision against LSU, both at the No. 2 position. The Tigers are idle until a Feb. 22 match at Dartmouth.
USF (4-4) won both of its dual matches last week as the Bulls were 7-0 winners against Stetson and 4-3 winners against Florida Atlantic. Alberto Barroso-Campos led the way with a pair of straight-set wins at No. 1 singles as he improved to 7-1 in dual matches this season. The Bulls do not play again until a Feb. 22 match against Charlotte.
SMU (7-3) took two of its three dual matches last week. The Mustangs fell 7-0 to Arkansas, but claimed both ends of a Sunday doubleheader thanks to a 7-0 win against Arkansas Pine Bluff and a 6-1 decision against Incarnate Word. The Mustangs have a pair of matches on this week’s docket as SMU hosts LSU Friday and entertains UT San Antonio Sunday.
Temple (3-3) fell 4-1 to VCU in the Owls’ only match from last week. The Owls’ doubles tandem of Alberto Caceres Casas/Mark Wallner remains The American’s highest-ranked pair, moving to No. 20 in the national rankings thanks to a 6-0 record at the No. 1 position. Temple visits Navy Sunday in its only match of the week.
Tulane (4-3), ranked No. 19 in the Feb. 6 Oracle/ITA rankings, looks to snap a three-match slide after the Green Wave fell 4-1 to No. 3 Mississippi State and 4-2 to Texas Tech last week. The lone point against the Bulldogs came from Hamish Stewart, who was a three-set winner at No. 3 singles. Tulane will begin play in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago Friday. The pairings for the tournament will be announced Wednesday.
Tulsa (9-3) fell 6-1 to No. 6 Texas, but answered with a 4-3 win against Cornell last week. The Golden Hurricane has been led by freshman Kody Pearson, who is off to an 11-1 start in dual matches and has won his last 10 contests. Tulsa hosts LSU Sunday in its only dual match of the week.
Wichita State (4-4) dropped a 6-0 decision to No. 15 TCU in the Shockers’ only dual match from last week. Wichita State heads to Minnesota for a pair of matches on the Gophers’ campus this week. The Shockers face Minnesota Friday and battle Western Michigan Saturday.
