Women's Tennis Notebook - SMU's Buss Takes Weekly Honors As Mustangs Win Two

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of its weekly men’s and women’s tennis honors for the week-ending Feb. 10.

Buss went 2-0 in singles matches, winning both in straight sets, to lead SMU to a pair of dual match wins last week. She was a 6-3, 7-6 (3) winner at No. 1 singles in the Mustangs’ 4-3 win against USC, scoring a victory against the nation’s No. 20-ranked player. She went on to take a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles and a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles in a 6-0 victory against Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Buss has gone 4-2 against ranked opponents this season.

UCF’s women’s team is ranked No. 23 nationally in the Jan. 30 Oracle/ITA rankings. The next team rankings will be announced Wednesday, Feb. 13, while the next singles and doubles rankings will be announced Feb. 19.

The 2019 American Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will be held in April at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. The women’s championship takes place April 17-20, while the men’s championship will be played April 18-21.
 
WOMEN’S TENNIS UPDATE
UCF (4-2), which is ranked No. 23 in the Oracle/ITA rankings, was idle last week The Knights take to the road for a pair of matches against SEC opponents with a Friday contest at Alabama and a Sunday contest at Ole Miss.
 
Cincinnati (4-2) earned a 7-0 win against IUPUI before the Bearcats edged Western Michigan 4-3 to extend their winning streak to three matches. Antonella Bramato won the clinching point at No. 2 singles against Western Michigan, while Maria Stantilli remained unbeaten on the season, improving to 6-0 with two wins. Cincinnati visits Miami (Ohio) Saturday in its only dual match of the week.

Freshman Maria Santilli was a straight-set winner at No. 5 singles, extending her winning streak to four matches as she remains unbeaten (4-0) on the spring. UConn (2-4) gained a split of a pair of matches in East Lansing, Michigan, last week as the Huskies fell 6-1 to Michigan State before taking a 5-2 win against Detroit Mercy. Julieanne Bou was a winner in both matches as she won a third-set tiebreaker against Michigan State before taking a straight-set win against Detroit Mercy. UConn faces Seton Hall Sunday on the campus of Yale University in the Huskies’ lone match of the week.
 
ECU (2-2) scored wins against a pair of American Athletic Conference counterparts last week as the Pirates took a 4-1 win at Tulane and were 4-2 winners against Memphis in New Orleans. Lisa Hofbauer led the way from the No. 1 position by winning both singles matches by 6-3, 6-3 scores. ECU looks for its third straight win as the Pirates host James Madison Friday before ECU hosts a Sunday doubleheader against Campbell and Winston-Salem State.
 
Houston (5-2) picked up a pair of dual match wins last week as the Cougars scored a 4-1 win against Wichita State and were 7-0 winners against Stephen F. Austin. Houston has two matches on this week’s schedule – a Friday home contest against Florida Gulf Coast and a Sunday match at No. 18 LSU.
 
Memphis (2-4) split a pair of matches against American Athletic Conference opponents last week as the Tigers dropped a 4-2 decision to ECU and took a 4-3 win against Tulane. Lina Hohnhold has given the Tiger lineup a spark from the bottom of the ladder as she has gone 4-2 in dual matches, including a 3-0 mark at No. 6 singles. Memphis hosts the first two of four straight home matches with a Friday matchup against Missouri and a Sunday contest against Minnesota.
 
USF (4-3) was idle last week. The Mustangs resume play Friday at No. 25 Kentucky and at No. 24 Tennessee Sunday.
 
SMU (3-3) enjoyed an excellent week as the Mustangs scored a 4-3 victory against USC before rolling to a 6-0 win against Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Senior Liza Buss improved her record against ranked opponents to 4-2 this season after she scored a victory against the nation’s 20th-ranked player from USC. The Mustangs host Tulane Sunday in their only dual match of the week.
 
Temple (2-1) was idle last week. The Owls return from a long layoff to face La Salle Wednesday in Philadelphia.
 
Tulane (4-4), which opened the season with four straight wins, looks to snap a four-match slide after the Green Wave fell to a pair of American Athletic Conference opponents last week. Tulane dropped a 4-1 decision to ECU and suffered a 4-3 setback to Memphis in New Orleans. The Green Wave looks to get back on track Friday at No. 20 Texas Tech before heading to Dallas to face SMU.
 
Tulsa (7-4) picked up a 4-1 win against Arkansas in the Golden Hurricane’s only dual match from last week. Tulsa got wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, along with the doubles point, to improve to 7-4 on the year. The Golden Hurricane visits No. 11 Kansas Saturday for its lone dual match of this week.
 
Wichita State (2-4) dropped its first two matches of the week, falling 4-2 to Missouri and 4-1 at Houston, before rallying for a 5-1 victory at UT Arlington to close the week. The Shockers head to Lincoln, Nebraska, for three matches this week. Wichita State faces Louisville Saturday before a Sunday doubleheader against Nebraska and Creighton.
