Cincinnati, Houston, and Wichita State take home final weekly indoor track and field honors


PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the final winners of the league’s weekly indoor track and field honors for the 2018-19 season.
 
MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Quincy Mitchell * Fr. * Cincinnati * Hanahan, S.C.
Mitchell placed second in the 60-meter dash with a personal-best time of 6.75 seconds at the OSU Tune-Up on Friday. His time pushed him into the top five on The American’s performance list this season and ranks No. 2 all-time in Cincinnati history.
 
FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Brianne Bethel * Jr. * Houston * Freeport, Bahamas
Bethel, the recipient of The American’s 2018 Most Valuable Outdoor Performance award, ran the fourth-fastest 400-meter time in the league this season after winning the event at the Aggie Twilight in 54.29 seconds. It marked her first time running the 400m indoors, as her mark ranks fourth all-time in Houston history.
 
MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Felipe Valencia * Sr. * Houston * Mission, Texas
Valencia continues to shine in the shot put, as the senior placed first at the Aggie Twilight with his distance of 18.10 meters (59-4.75). Valencia leads The American in the shot put this year, as he defeated the competition by three feet to claim his third title of the indoor season. Valencia won the conference’s indoor shot put title as a freshman in 2016.
 
FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Kelsey Slawson * Sr. * Wichita State * Paola, Kan.
Slawson ended the regular season bettering her school-record shot put toss with a distance of 15.72 meters (51-7) to win the Arkansas Qualifier on Friday. Her toss ranks No. 2 in The American and No. 41 in the nation this year.
