PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly women’s basketball honors, for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 24.
Player of the Week
Kay Kay Wright * Jr. * G * UCF
Wright anchored UCF in a 2-0 week that saw the Knights match the most wins for the program since joining Division I. She was the Knights’ leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 22.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game along with 2.5 assists, while shooting 51 percent from the field. Against Wichita State on Wednesday, Wright scored 21 points while grabbing six rebounds, and followed on Saturday with 24 points, seven boards and four assists against Temple. She recorded her 1,000
th career point in the process, and has now reached the 20-point mark in 13 games on the season.
Freshman of the Week
Jamirah Shutes * Fr. * G * Memphis
Shutes earned her second Freshman of the Week nod after leading Memphis on both ends of the floor last week. Shutes averaged 15.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals for the Tigers, including a 20-point, eight-rebound and four-steal performance against Houston on Sunday. The freshman additionally owns the conference’s current active free throw streak, having connected on her past 37 attempts dating back to Jan. 30.

Averaged 15.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game in Cincinnati’s 2-0 week, including a 14-point, seven-rebound and six-steal outing against Tulsa on Wednesday

Led the Huskies to a share of the regular season title, averaging 21 points, 9.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists; posted her best performance of the season against Memphis on Wednesday with a line of 32 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and eight 3-pointers

Registered a career-high 24 points, including six 3-pointers, in Houston’s overtime win over Tulane on Wednesday, connecting on 57 percent from the field; averaged 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game for the week

Recorded the highest single-game scoring mark in The American this season with 35 points in USF’s win at ECU, including six 3-pointers and a 13-for-14 performance from the foul line; averaged 23.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game on the Bulls’ 2-0 week

Scored a career-high 24 points, including six 3-pointers and a 67 percent performance from the field, to lead SMU to a 64-60 win over Tulane on Sunday; for the week, averaged 15 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.5 steals as the Mustangs went 2-0
