Indianapolis, Ind. – The ECU men scored 119 points through three scored events on Wednesday to lead the way through the opening day of The American’s 2019 Swimming and Diving Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium. The Pirates set the conference’s meet record in the 200 medley relay on the way to capturing their third title in this event.

Cincinnati won the 800 freestyle relay and finished the day in second place with 118 points, while UConn rounded out the top three with 94 points. SMU took home its sixth 3-meter dive title, ending Wednesday’s action with 86 points. The title meet continues tomorrow with prelims starting at 10 a.m. ET and finals beginning at 6 p.m. ET.

The men’s meet started with the 3-meter dive prelims, as Cincinnati’s Louie Hunt (317.35), SMU’s Parker Hardigree (314.35) and ECU’s Devin Nugent (298.95) entered the finals with the top-three scores, respectively. Hardigree’s prelim dive was good for a personal record, as he carried the momentum into the finals, taking home the gold medal with his score of 337.45 for a lifetime best. The Rookie became the third Mustang to win the event, as SMU has captured each of The American’s 3-meter dive titles. He scored his most points on his sixth dive—a reverse 1 1/2 somersault, 2 1/2 twist free.

Nugent improved from a sixth-place finish in 2018, finishing as this year’s runner-up with his score of 309.00. Hunt, last year’s fifth-place finisher, took the third podium spot with his score of 307.15, as the finals featured three Bearcats.

Cincinnati won its second-straight 800 freestyle relay title, posting the second-fastest time in conference history (6:25.27). The team included three of last year’s first-place squad in Justin Crew, Tobias Van Dyke and Din Selmanovic. Alexander Fortman swam the second leg of the relay for the Bearcats this year. ECU, which took home the 800 free relay title in 2015, 2016 and 2017, was this year’s runner up. The Pirates’ team of Marek Osina, Pietro Nannucci, Grega Popovic and Blaz Demsar placed second with their time of 6:28.46. SMU claimed third place with Matan Segal, Carson Klein, Matthew Nutter and Lucas Schenke clocking 6:29.15.

Winning the 200 medley relay title for a second-consecutive year, ECU’s team of Tristan Taylor, Jacek Arentewicz, Gustavo Santos and Gavin Erdmann swam for a conference-record time of 1:26.19. The same four Pirates swam for first place in this event a year ago. SMU’s team of Earl Killbride, Aedan Lewis, Szymon Golczyk and Ralph Koo placed second (1:27.07), while Cincinnati (Blake Hanna, Dominic Polling, Alberto Garcia and Kevin McCaffrey) finished third (1:28.35).
