Highlights
- Four American Athletic Conference swimming and diving programs competed in their first February meets over the weekend. Cincinnati and UConn wrapped up their regular season schedules, as the rest of the league will compete in their final meets before the postseason over the following two weeks. The postseason begins in Indiana at the American Athletic Conference Championships starting on Feb. 27.
For a third-straight week, Houston faced a ranked opponent, as the Cougars took on No. 25 LSU and Rice. The Cougars defeated Rice 200.50-90.50 but fell to the Tigers, 193-107. Houston collected 14 podium finishes, including four first-place swims in the opening day of action. Laura Laderoute continues to be a mainstay on the podium for Houston with three top-three finishes that included one first-place finish. Laderoute won the 100 Backstroke with a time of 54.77. Joining Laderoute with top finishes was Zarena Brown (200 freestyle), Samantha Medlin (500 freestyle) and Peyton Kondis (200 breaststroke).
Cincinnati closed out its dual-meet schedule on Friday night against Kentucky. In swimming events, which was hosted by the Bearcats, the men fell 101-156 and the women lost 157-100. The divers traveled to Lexington, Ky., to compete against the Wildcats. The men’s and women’s teams combined for 23 podium finishes. Din Selmanovic (500 freestyle), Parker Saladin (200 butterfly), Olivia Schmelzer (100 freestyle) and Blake Hann (100 backstroke) each placed first in an individual event.
UConn stayed in Storrs to host the Husky Invitational on Saturday. The Huskies swept their home meet, as the men’s team earned nine gold medals, while the women swam for 12. Will Kearsey (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Mathew Dagenais (100 breaststroke, 200 IM) and William Mudlaff (100 backstroke, 100 butterfly) were double winners for the men. On the women’s side, Annika Grewal (100 backstroke, 200 backstroke) led a pack of 28 podium finishes, as the senior was a multi-event winner.
SMU fell, 120-83, to No. 10 Texas A&M, as the Mustangs drops to 3-2 in dual action this season. SMU opened the evening with a season-best 3:17.66 in the 400 medley relay for the win. Matan Segal, Connor Dalbo, Golczyk and Schenke teamed up for the victory. The Mustangs also picked up first-place points in the closing 400 freestyle relay from Ralph Koo, Matthew Nutter, Jesse Washington and Schenke. Segal led a trio of Mustangs to a sweep in the 200 backstroke, clocking in at 1:46.57.
