2019 NCAA Championship Bracket
PROVIDENCE, R.I.- Four American Athletic Conference men's basketball programs- UCF, Cincinnati, Houston and Temple- were selected for the 2019 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship as announced by the NCAA Men's Basketball Committee on Sunday. The four teams in the bracket tie a conference high set in 2014 and matched in 2016. The American also set a conference record with seven postseason teams. Memphis and Wichita State were selected to the NIT while USF will compete in the CBI.
Houston (31-3), The American's regular season champion, received a No. 3 seed in the Midwest Region and faces No. 14 Georgia State (23-9) on Friday, March 22, in Tulsa, Okla. It is the second-straight season that an American team will face Georgia State as Cincinnati took on the Panthers in a 2-15 matchup in 2018. Houston is tied for the best winning percentage in the nation (.912).
Cincinnati (28-6), The American tournament champion for the second-straight season, received a No. 7 seed in the South Region and will take on No. 10 Iowa (22-11) on Friday, March 22, in Columbus, Ohio. Bearcat fans will not have to travel far as Nationwide Arena is less than two hours away from Cincinnati.
UCF (23-8), which enjoyed one of its strongest seasons in program history, earned a No. 9 seed in the East Regional and faces No. 8 VCU (25-7) on Friday, March 22, in Colombia, S.C. This is the first-ever NCAA at-large bid for the Knights.
Temple (23-9) will be part of the First Four in Dayton, Ohio, on Tuesday, March 19, as a No. 11 seed. The Owls face No. 11 Belmont (26-5) with the winner advancing to the East Regional in Jacksonville, Fla., against No. 6 Maryland (22-10).
In The American's inaugural season, four teams went to the dance with UConn winning the 2014 NCAA Championship. In 2016, The American had a seven, eight, nine and First Four 11-seed, as the conference's seeds has improved immensely in 2019.
The American's postseason squads also include two NIT selections that advanced to The American quarterfinals.
Memphis (21-13) is a No. 3 seed in the NIT and will host No. 6 San Diego (21-14) on Tuesday, March 19.
Wichita State (19-14) earned a No. 6 seed in the NIT and will play at No. 3 Furman (25-7) Wednesday, March 20.
USF (19-13) host a College Basketball Invitational (CBI) First Round game on Wednesday, March 20 when the Bulls take on Stony Brook (24-8).
