PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the week ending March 24.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Spencer Brickhouse * Jr. * DH/1B * ECU
Brickhouse batted .500 (6-for-12) through a three-game sweep of UCF in ECU’s conference opener. He slugged 1.250 and recorded a pair of home runs, eight RBIs and scored five runs. Brickhouse recorded the game-winning RBI Saturday with a three-run homer in the fifth inning and hit the game-winning solo home run in the eighth inning Sunday. Brickhouse registered a hit in each game, including multi-hit efforts in Games 1 and 2 of the series. He went 3-for-5 with four RBIs Friday and 2-for-4 with three RBIs Saturday.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Garrett Schoenle * So. * LHP * Cincinnati
Schoenle had a phenomenal performance on the mound in Sunday’s 4-1 rubber-match victory at USF to help Cincinnati clinch its conference-opening series in Tampa. The sophomore southpaw pitched into the ninth, giving up just four hits and three walks in 8.1 innings while striking out a career-best 12 batters. The one run he allowed came in the final inning after he left the game with one out and two runners on. He retired the side in order three times and had at least one strikeout in seven innings.
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Mason Feole * Jr. * LHP * UConn
UConn received a stellar start from Feole Friday night at Houston, as the All-America southpaw racked up a season-high eight strikeouts through 7.0 inning of work in a 2-1 win. He allowed one unearned run while scattering three hits. The lefthander went through a stretch of retiring 10 Cougars in a row from the third to sixth inning.
Collin Sullivan * Jr. * RHP * USF
Sullivan tossed 7.0 innings in USF’s 4-2 conference-opener win against Cincinnati Friday, striking out a career high 11 batters. He allowed just one run on three hits for his second win of the year.
Kaleb Roper * R-Sr. * RHP * Tulane
Roper struck out a career-best 12 batters Friday night in Tulane’s 6-2 win over Houston Baptist. The righthander went 7.2 innings without a walk, while scattering five hits and allowing just two runs. Roper retired 16-consecutive batters from the end of the second inning until midway through the seventh.
Luke Ritter * Sr. * 2B/SS * Wichita State
Ritter hit in each game, including a pair of multi-hit showings while batting .375 through a 3-1 week. He tallied six hits, including two home runs and slugged .750 with a team-best four RBIs to go along with four runs and four walks. Ritter is on a 13-game hitting streak, and has reached base safely in 35 games dating back to last season.
Mitchell Walters * Jr. * RHP * Wichita State
Walters made three appearances in relief for the Shockers, posting a 0.00 ERA on one hit with one walk and seven strikeouts in five innings. He picked up his team-best third save of the season after throwing two scoreless innings, allowing one hit with no walks and three punch outs in an 8-4 win over Memphis Saturday.
