Highlights

Cincinnati 17, San Diego State 11
With a well balanced scoring attack that saw seven different players score, the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team snapped a three-game slide with a big win Friday afternoon at Gettler Stadium as the Bearcats scored a 17-11 victory over visiting San Diego State, handing the visitors just their second loss of the season. The Bearcats (4-5) saw three players score hat tricks, including Alyssa Adams (4), Monica Borzillo (4) and Kylie Nause (3), to move to 4-1 at home on the year and defeat an Aztecs (8-2) team that not only was playing in their first true road contest of 2019, but also entered the day receiving votes in the latest Inside Lacrosse Top 20 rankings.

For the second game in a row, one team got off to a hot scoring start, but this time, it was Cincinnati as the Bearcats scored the first three goals for an early 3-0 lead after Borzillo, Nause and Adams each found the back of the cage. The Aztecs scored two of their own to cut the lead to one (3-2), but UC responded with two in a row of its own as Borzillo and Adams found the scoring touch again. After another SDSU goal made it 5-3, Sam Mlkvy scored on a pass from Nause - her first collegiate assist - before Adams tallied her third free-position goal of the first half to end the scoring in the opening stanza with UC on top, 7-3.

Following the halftime break, the visitors struck first before Nause and Borzillo scored once again to make it 9-4. The Aztecs answered back with one of their own (9-5) before Finotti stepped in and scored on back-to-back possessions, including tallying her second on a free-position attempt. With the score 13-5, SDSU scored twice in a row to cut the lead back to six (13-7) before UC ran off three of its own as Donovan, Borzillo and Jayde Sains each scored to put the Bearcats back in front by nine (16-7). With 11:58 remaining, the Aztecs went on the attack and scored four in a row, bringing them to within six once again with 7:43 remaining, but the Bearcats would stand tall the rest of the way on defense, not allowing the visitors to score again while Donovan added her second to bring about the final tally, 17-11.

Florida 11, Stony Brook 10
The 16th-ranked Florida Gators topped the 17th-ranked Stony Brook Seawolves, 11-10 in a tightly-contested battle on Saturday afternoon.

Shannon Kavanagh led the offensive attack for Florida – posting five goals on the day. That total tied her career-best and gave the sophomore her sixth hat trick this season. Lindsey Ronbeck followed with two of her own, while Sydney Pirreca, Grace Haus and Caroline Benitez each added one apiece.

The Gator defense caused six turnovers on the day and held Stony Brook to a .310 shooting percentage (10-of-31). Cara Trombetta led the way defensively with three caused turnovers, while Sabrina Cristodero added two.

Haley Hicklen posted 15 saves in the cage today, recording a .583 saves percentage in her 60 minutes of play. This was the fifth game that Hicklen has recorded double-digit saves and the 15 saves are just one off her career-best.

Defense reigned supreme in the first half, with goals coming at a premium for both squads.

Lindsey Ronbeck got the Gators on the board first, converting on a free-position attempt at the 24:34 mark, but Stony Brook answered back at the 23:24 mark to even it a one apiece.

Florida continued to tack on goals early in the second-half, with Ronbeck and Madi Hall both scoring on free-position attempts to give Florida the 8-5 lead. Stony Brook fought back after the Gator run, going on a spurt of its own to tie it all up at 8-8.

The Gators retook the lead on Kavanagh's fourth goal of the game – this one on a feed from Grace Haus.

Kavanagh continued firing, scoring her fifth goal of the game on a pass from Hall, giving Florida the 10-8 lead with just under eight minutes to play.

The Seawolves cut the deficit to one goal at the 6:53 mark, but Pirreca fired one into the net on a free-position shot to once again give Florida the two-goal lead.

Stony Brook was able to cut it to one goal again at 11-10, but the Gators were able to hold on to secure the victory.

Delaware 17, UConn 9
Junior Olivia Miles had four goals but UConn women's lacrosse (1-8) fell, 17-9, to Delaware in the first ever meeting between the two teams at the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Caitlin Leary and freshman Lia LaPrise each added a pair of goals, senior Dani Dunn found the back of the net once, and junior goalkeeper Grace Beshlian made 5 saves for the Huskies. LaPrise also finished the afternoon with a team-high four assists.

UConn was within striking distance of the Blue Hens early in the second half, trailing 10-6, after a Miles goal at 23:52 made it a four goal game.

But Delaware went on two multiple-goal runs to put the game out of reach.

Leary notched her second goal of the afternoon less than a minute into the second, cutting the UConn deficit to four, but Delaware scored eight of the next 10 goals to grab control of the game. Olivia Miles completed her hat trick at 7:10 and then netted her fourth of the game at 4:27, but the Blue Hens left with a 17-9 triumph.

Jacksonville 7, Temple 5
Despite scoring three of the second half's four goals, Temple lacrosse (3-7) came up short in its comeback attempt against visiting Jacksonville (5-2) and lost 7-5. It was the Owls' last game before starting its American Athletic Conference slate next Saturday, March 30 against #16 Florida.

The Owls took 18 shots on goal to Jacksonville's 15, but the Dolphins' goalkeeper Dayna Martinetto came up with 13 saves. Both teams got seven draw controls and the Owls had the edge in ball handling with 18 turnovers to Jacksonville's 24 on a very windy day at Howarth Field.

Temple trailed 5-1 midway through the first half and 6-2 at halftime. The Owls scored the final two goals of the game but couldn't close the gap.

Junior Olivia Thompson and sophomore Bridget Whitaker each scored two goals to lead the Owls. Whitaker also led Temple with four caused turnovers.

Junior Maddie Gebert got one goal and sophomore Jen Rodzewich recorded one assist.

Longwood 15, ECU 8
Despite an edge in the draw circle, the ECU women's lacrosse team could not convert the possession to goals and fell to Longwood 15-8 on Saturday afternoon.

ECU (5-6) drops its fifth straight game. Longwood (3-7) snaps a four-game losing streak.

In the early going, the two teams were evenly matches. Megan Pallozzi opened the scoring with an unassisted goal, but Longwood responded with a pair of goals. Pallozzi scored again at 24:55 off a pass from Emma Bowman to tie the game at 2-2.

From there, Longwood grabbed control of the game. The Lancers scored two straight goals, a run that was only stopped by a man-up goal from Megan Tryniski. After Tryniski's goal, Longwood held ECU scoreless for over 10 straight minutes while the Lancers rattled off four straight goals. The run finally came to an end when Camryn Pennypacker scored an unassisted goal. The two teams each added one more goal before the end of the half, with Pennypacker scoring once more for ECU. That made it 10-5 in favor of Longwood at the break.

Any hope for an ECU comeback was severely diminished when the Lancers opened the second half on a 4-0 scoring run while the Pirates did not score for 15 minutes. ECU's first goal of the final 30 minutes came when Ally Stanton scored with 13:40 remaining.

Pennypacker and Pallozzi were the only Pirates with multiple points on the day. Nicole LeGar racked up 10 draw controls and caused three turnovers. Christina White made two saves in just over 45 minutes of action for ECU while Savvy Smith played the final 14:28.

Cincinnati 22, Gardner-Webb 9
Nine different players scored at least one goal and four of those individuals tallied hat tricks as the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team exploded for 22 goals for the second time this year as the Bearcats handed visiting Gardner-Webb a 22-9 defeat Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium. Monica Borzillo netted a team-high six goals while Kylie Nause (four), Alyssa Adams (three) and Gianna Napoletano (three) all added hat tricks for the Bearcats (5-5) while Abby Hanscom led the way for the Runnin' Bulldogs (5-5) with four.

Despite winning the opening draw and getting a shot off, the Bearcats trailed 1-0 early as GWU scored first in the opening minute of play. UC responded in a big way, however, as five different players scored, including Taylor Gysin, Amanda Donovan, Adams, Nause and Borzillo, to put UC on top, 5-1. The goal for Borzillo goes down as the 900th home goal scored in program history. After the Bearcats' five-goal run was halted by a Runnin' Bulldogs goal, UC responded by scoring the next five in a row to make it 10-2 with 13:09 remaining in the half. In the second run, goals were scored by Borzillo (three), Adams and Mlkvy.

The visitors answered with three goals of their own to make 10-5 with 10:40 remaining before the Bearcats closed out the half with their third, five-goal run of the game, to make it 15-5 at the break. The last run of the half saw Napoletano net all three of her goals with Kate Carney and Jayde Sains each adding one goal.

Following the intermission, GWU cut the UC advantage to eight (15-7) before UC responded with its fourth, five-goal spree of the day, this time seeing both Nause and Borzillo bagging two goals each and Mlkvy adding her second. The Runnin' Bulldogs would bookend the final two goals scored by UC - Adams and Nause - to close out the game with the Bearcats winning by 13, the seventh-largest margin of victory in program history.

Vanderbilt 19, Butler 2
Vanderbilt continued its perfect start at home this season with a dominant 19-2 win over Butler on Sunday at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex.

The Commodores (8-2) saw their home record improve to 5-0 as they handled the Bulldogs with their strong offensive attack. Defensively, the Commodores played their best game of the year, causing 14 turnovers and allowing just two goals on 14 shots.

The two goals given up are the fewest the Dores have allowed since permitting one against Kennesaw State in 2015.

Vanderbilt opened the game with an 11-0 scoring run to start the game that saw nine different Commodores score in that stretch.

Gabby Fornia led the offense with a five-point performance, her second-highest in her career. She scored two goals and assisted on three other occasions to bring her to a team-high 25 assists.

Sophie Furlong recorded her third-career hat trick of the season with her three goals as one of five Commodores with multiple goals. Hadley Brown, Karlie Bucci and Emily Mathewson were the three others with two goals apiece.

Lily Argyle earned her sixth win of the season, recording two saves in the process. Grace Bell also saw time as goalkeeper and had two saves.
