Men's Tennis Notebook - USF's Barroso-Campos Is Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of its weekly men’s and women’s tennis honors for the week-ending March 25.
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Alberto Barroso-Campos • Sr. • USF • Montijo, Spain

Barroso-Campos went 2-1 at No. 1 singles against three nationally ranked players and was 2-0 at No. 1 doubles, including a win against a ranked tandem, to lead USF to a 2-1 week. Barroso-Campos was a three-set winner in the Bulls’ 5-2 victory against No. 37 Tulsa and went three sets to lead a 5-2 victory against SMU as he defeated the No. 73 and 74-ranked players nationally. He paired with Pierre Luquet for two doubles wins, including a victory against Tulsa’s No. 55-ranked tandem. Barroso-Campos’ only setback during the week was a three-set decision at No. 1 to Oklahoma’s top player, who is ranked No. 54.

The 2019 American Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will be held in April at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. The women’s championship takes place April 17-20, while the men’s championship will be played April 18-21.
 
 
MEN’S TENNIS UPDATE
UCF (10-9), ranked No. 42 nationally, scored a 4-0 win against No. 26 Oklahoma State in its first match from last week, but the Knights were unable to score a second win against a ranked opponent as No. 13 Illinois claimed a 4-2 decision Friday. Trey Hilderbrand was a winner in both singles and doubles against the Illini as he took a 7-6 (4) win in doubles alongside Bogdan Pavel against the nation’s No. 37-ranked tandem and added a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles. The tandem of Pavel/Hilderbrand is ranked No. 54, while the Knights’ Gabriel Decamps is No. 38 in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings. UCF hosts Florida Atlantic Sunday in its only match of this week.
 
UConn (7-12) was idle last week. The Huskies resume play Saturday at Quinnipiac for their only match of this week
 
ECU (13-4) snapped a modest two-match slide with a pair of wins last week as the Pirates topped UNC Greensboro (6-1) and Presbyterian (5-2). Diogo Marques led the way with wins at No. 1 singles, including a straight-set victory against UNC Greensboro’s top player. Marques stands a 9-5 in dual matches, while Javier Renones leads the way with a 12-1 mark. ECU visits Temple Saturday for its only match of the week.
 
Memphis (10-9) went 1-2 at the San Diego Spring Invitational last week as the Tigers sandwiched a 4-2 win against No. 48 Wichita State between setbacks to No. 36 San Diego (4-0) and San Diego State (4-3). Memphis has the highest-ranked doubles tandem in The American as the duo of David Stevenson/Oscar Cutting stands at No. 30. The Tigers are idle until an April 2 match at Tulsa.
 
USF (13-6) saw its winning streak reach six matches with 5-2 victories against Tulsa and SMU last week before No. 20 Oklahoma ended the run with a 7-0 decision. The Bulls, ranked No. 46 nationally, continue to be led by Alberto Barroso-Campos, who is rated No. 19 nationally in singles and has a 16-2 mark this season. USF is idle until an April 12 match against Memphis.
 
SMU (10-10) dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 46 USF in the Mustangs’ only match from last week. SMU got wins from Tomas Vaise at No. 4 singles and Huntley Allen at No. 6. SMU has three matches on this week’s docket, beginning with a Tuesday trip to No. 10 TCU. SMU then faces New Orleans Friday and Tulane Sunday.
 
Temple (8-6) enjoyed a 3-0 week as the Owls won all three contests in convincing fashion. Temple began with a 7-0 win against Hofstra, followed by a 6-1 decision against Wagner and a 7-0 victory against Lehigh. Temple hosts Morgan State Thursday and entertains ECU Saturday in Philadelphia.
 
Tulane (8-11) went 2-1 at the San Diego Spring Invitational as the Green Wave extended its winning streak to four matches with wins against Drake (4-2) and No. 38 Harvard (4-2) before No. 36 San Diego claimed a 4-3 victory in the championship match. The final came down to the No. 3 singles contest, where San Diego’s player held on for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory. Tulane plays host to two American Athletic Conference opponents this week. The Green Wave faces No. 37 Tulsa Friday and SMU Sunday.
 
Tulsa (11-9), ranked No. 37 nationally, dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 46 USF last week in Tampa. The wins came at No. 4 and No. 5 singles as Jarod Hing won a three-set battle while Stefan Hampe won in straight sets. The Golden Hurricane visits No. 49 Tulane Thursday before taking on UTSA Sunday in Tulsa.
 
Wichita State (11-9) went 1-2 at the San Diego Spring Invitational last week as the Shockers fell 4-1 to No. 50 Princeton, dropped a 4-2 decision to Memphis and rebounded to take a 4-1 victory against Drake. Wichita State was led by junior Murkel Dellien, woh scored two straight-set wins in singles, including a victory against the No. 72-rated player from Drake. Dellien also paired with Marius Frosa for three doubles wins, including a 6-4 decision against Memphis’ No. 30-ranked tandem. The Shockers host Creighton Friday and UTSA Saturday.
