PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winner of the league’s boat of the week award for the initial time this season.
 
BOAT OF THE WEEK
UCF – Varsity 8
Members: Nicole Mayer, Grace Lindberg, Julie Poulsen, Leslie Lajoie, Aly Derksen, Edvina Nesukaityte, Luci Derrick, Abbie Pritchard and Shannon Perry
 
UCF’s varsity 8 closed out its home regatta with the fifth Black and Gold victory of the day. The boat cruised to a win and crossed the finish line at 6:39.6. The Knights were nearly 10 seconds ahead of the defending Division II national champion Central Oklahoma. UCF was also more than 10 seconds ahead of fellow American Athletic Conference member UConn as well as Jacksonville. On the day, UCF won five of six races.
 
 
AROUND THE AMERICAN
SMU posted a pair of second-place finishes in the final at the Cooper Sprints on the Cooper River in New Jersey on Sunday. The Mustangs qualified for the Grand Final in three of four events on the 2,000-meter course with the second varsity eight and second varsity four each earned silvers … Temple took home three golds at the 37th Annual Murphy Cup on Saturday at the Cooper River. The Owls won the third varsity eight, as well as the varsity four and second varsity four events. The varsity eight won their finals-only race to earn the top spot, while the fours both earned gold based on recording the fastest times in the morning round of heats …  Old Dominion defeated George Mason in all four events on Saturday. The Monarchs’ varsity eight boast put up a time of 6:40.9 … UConn opened season against UCF and won the third varsity four event, while its second varsity four took second.
