PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the week ending March 3.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kyle Phillips * Sr. * OF * USF
Phillips had multiple hits in each game of a three-game series sweep of Western Michigan. He hit .500 (6-for-12) over the weekend with six runs, five RBIs and four extra base hits (two home runs, a triple and a double). Phillips went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run in the series opener and went 2-for-3 on Saturday with a two-run homer. Phillips finished the weekend with a 2-for-4 showing and three runs scored Sunday.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Chris Williams * R-Sr. * RHP * UCF
Making his first start of the season, Williams fanned eight batters through 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and one walk in a 3-0 shutout win against Jacksonville Saturday. After seeing a runner reach in the first and second innings, Williams retired the side in order in the third, fifth and sixth innings.
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Jeffrey Hakanson * So. * RHP * UCF
Hakanson had a busy week in relief, collecting three saves. The righty struck out four through 2.2 innings at No. 5 Florida to clinch his first save of the week Wednesday. Hakanson then tossed a pair of shutout innings out of the bullpen in the second and third games of a series against Jacksonville, allowing no hits and combining for four strikeouts.
Tyler Osik * R-Sr. * 1B/OF * UCF
Osik had two three-hit performances, reached safely in each game and batted .438 (7-for-16) through a 3-1 week. He started with a 3-for-5 showing with a double and two RBIs in a 12-9 win at No. 5 Florida Wednesday. He added four hits against Jacksonville over the weekend, including a 3-for-5 day in Sunday’s 6-4 rubber match win.
Colton Neel * Sr. * OF/LHP * Memphis
Neel batted .308 (4-for-13) through four games and tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in relief. He had a three-hit night with a two-run double and three RBIs in Saturday’s 7-5 win against Middle Tennessee. In the same game, he took the mound in the ninth inning and registered his first save of the season.
Joe Genord * Sr. * 1B * USF
Genord hit .500 (5-for-10) with five RBIs, six runs, two home runs, a double and a .667 on-base percentage in a 3-0 week. He logged multi-hit performances and two RBIs in the first and second games of the series against Western Michigan.
Kody Hoese * Jr. * 3B * Tulane
Hoese went 7-for-16 (.438) in a 3-1 week with four RBIs, two home runs and four runs scored. He hit a two-run homer in a 5-1 win over Dartmouth Friday and registered two hits, including a solo home run, in a 12-7 win against Saint Joseph’s Saturday. He went 3-for-3 with two runs against Army Sunday.
