PROVIDENCE, R.I. – SMU’s Andrea Podmanikova and Erin Trahan, along with Houston’s Peyton Kondis have each qualified for the 2019 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships held March 20-23 at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas, as announced by the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Committee Wednesday.
Podmanikova and Kondis both return to the national meet after being selected to compete for an NCAA title a year ago. At least three women swimmers from around the conference have earned bids to the NCAA Championships for the past six years.
A total of 322 participants (281 swimmers and 41 divers) will compete in the championships. Swimmers qualified for the championships by meeting the established minimum time for the events in which they entered. Divers will be determined by performances at the Zone Diving meets March 11-16. The men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving field will be announced Wednesday, March 13. Selected divers will be announced Sunday, March 17.
Podmanikova returns to the national meet in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. She also posted a B Cut time in the 200 IM (1:58.57). The sophomore set the SMU program and conference meet records in the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.66 at the Championships. She also won the 100 breast (59.81 seconds) at The American Championships, but her top time in this event came at the SMU Classic (59.68 seconds).
At the 2018 NCAA Championships, Podmanikova placed 27th in the 100 breast and 35th in the 200. This season, she is seeded 22nd in the 200 and 24th in the 100.
Trahan, who was selected as The American’s Most Outstanding Swimmer, used a career-best 51.92 seconds in the 100 butterfly at the conference meet to climb the NCAA rankings to 18th in the event and earn an invitation. Trahan also achieved the NCAA B Standard in the 50 freestyle (22.53 seconds) and 200 butterfly (1:56.44). Trahan won all three events at The American Championships last week.
While helping Houston win its third-straight American title, Kondis qualified in the 100 breaststroke. She clocked a personal-record time of 59.84 seconds for second place at The American Championships. Kondis also registered B Cut times in the 200 breast (2:10.62) and 200 IM (1:59.50) at the conference’s title meet. Both times were good for podium finishes and personal records.
Kondis competed in each of these events at the 2018 NCAA Championships, finishing 29th in the 100 breast, 41st in the 200 breast and 60th in the 200 IM.
Fifteen women from The American will compete in NCAA Zone Diving meets from March 11-16. Fourteen have qualified for the 1-meter with UConn’s Monica Marcello recording the top score in the conference of 356.70 in a dual meet against Villanova. Marcello also set The American’s meet record in the 3-meter with her score of 349.20 to lead 11 divers from American schools who will be competing in that event. Only two conference divers have met the NCAA Zone standards in the platform dive with Houston freshman Katie Deininger, the 2019 conference champion, leading the way with a score of 268.25 recorded at the Championships. Deininger and SMU’s Johanna Holloway are the only two divers in the conference to meet the NCAA Zone criteria in all three dives.
