Houston’s Lockhart Jr. named Pitcher of the Week, Tulane’s Hoese earns second-straight weekly award


PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the week ending April 14.
                
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kody Hoese * Jr. * 3B * Tulane
Hoese earns his second-straight American Player of the Week honor a week after being named National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). The junior third baseman slugged 1.200 and hit .467 through a 4-0 week, including a weekend sweep of USF. He had seven hits, 10 runs scored, six RBIs, two doubles, three home runs and drew two walks. Hoese had at least one hit and an RBI in each game, including a 3-for-5 showing with three RBIs in a 15-14 win over Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday. He extended his national home runs lead to 19, hitting a long ball in three games, setting The American's single-season record.
 
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Lael Lockhart Jr. * Jr. * LHP/DH * Houston
Lockhart Jr. recorded a career-high nine strikeouts and surrendered one unearned run across 6.0 innings in a 13-5 series-opening win at Wichita State Friday night. The southpaw junior picked up his third win of the season and scattered five hits and one walk through his outing. He also spent time as Houston’s designated hitter for three games, driving in three runs and recording two hits and two runs scored.
 
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL  
Grant Schuermann * R-Sr. * LHP * UCF
Schuermann tossed 6.0 scoreless innings in his start Friday night, as UCF blanked Cincinnati 15-0. The southpaw struck out five and worked around one walk and a pair of hits. He retired the side in order four times and allowed only two runners to reach scoring position. Schuermann kept a no-hitter through four innings.
 
Joey Bellini * Jr. * SS * Cincinnati
Bellini went 11-for-20 (.550) with three RBIs, a double and three walks in a 3-2 week, helping the Bearcats to a series win over UCF. Bellini hit in each game, registering multi-hit showings three times. He went 4-for-6 against Miami (Ohio) Wednesday night and 3-for-4 with two RBIs against UCF in Game 1 of a doubleheader Saturday.
 
Christian Fedko * So. * 2B/DH * UConn
Fedko batted .412 with seven hits, six RBIs, three doubles and three walks in a 4-1 week. He had multiple hits in three games and reached safely in all five contests. Fedko hit two doubles and drove in three runs in an 11-6 win at Bryant and pounded-out two more hits in a 6-2 win against Northeastern. In Sunday’s rubber match against Memphis, he went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and hit the two-run game-winning single in the eighth.  
 
Joe Davis * Sr. * 1B * Houston
Davis recorded three multi-hit performances, hit three home runs and slugged .941 with a .412 batting average (7-for-17) in a 4-0 week, including a weekend sweep of Wichita State. He also scored five times and drew four walks. Davis went 2-for-4 with a home run to help the Cougars clinch the Don Sanders Cup against Sam Houston State on Tuesday. He went 3-for-5 with two multi-run homers and five RBIs in the Cougars’ series opener at Wichita State.
 
Hunter Goodman * Fr. * DH/C * Memphis
Goodman hit .538 (7-for-13) in Memphis' three games at UConn. The freshman plated three runs and tallied four RBIs. Goodman enjoyed a 4-for-5 day Saturday, including his fifth home run of the season.
